On holiday in Iran. Caught a game in Tehran. Esteghlal vs Saipan. Massive stadium, largely empty, running track, poor standard of football, massive picture of the ayatollah staring down at us.

1976 the Spanish waiters in the hotel I was staying in played in a Spanish Sunday league, only game I’ve seen abroad.

Cannot match any of the great remote places posted so far, did play for a Spanish hotel team's staff team in Minorca against A Man Utd XI (consisting of supporters), to say it was a bit tasty would be an under statement, me thinking it was just going to bit a bit of a kick about.

The Spanish lads were deadly serious and most seems it played at a good local level, they played a rolling subs game so loads were coming on it seems just to kick the fcuk out of anyone in a Man Utd top

Thankfully the ref was Spanish, and of the 'Stroud school of refereeing', I think even he was cheering when the boots were clattering into anyone with a red top on.

Furthest I've seen a game was watching Club America v Pachuca at the Azteca in Mexico City, one of those things to tick off once and you could drink beer in the ground.

Most fun was watching Santa Clara of the Azores get promoted to the Portuguese top flight by accident about 5 years ago. Turned up in the Azores for a holiday, saw there was a game on, went to the stadium to find the whole place was flooded by queues right up to 5 minutes before kick off. Then all of a sudden they opened the gates and just let everyone in for free. They won 3-0, got promoted and its the only time I've ever been involved in a pitch invasion as it seemed to be fair game since everyone else was.

These days I am groundhopping round regional games in Catalunya, can usually get to a new one on a Sunday and they're all nice and local but it random places.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle vs Raith Rovers, Jan 2000? Not particularly remote, but cold, very cold. I think it was dark at the 3pm kick off time

About five years ago, my daughter was travelling in South America. I joined her for 10 days in Colombia (thoroughly recommended btw) and we went to see Independiente Santa Fe against Atletico Nacional. Although it was in the capital, Bogota, and Santa Fe were the home team, it appears AN are the Man U / Juve of Colombia, ie fans from all over the country - we ended up with them in the away end and they were brilliant, the singing, chanting and drumming never stopped, only got louder when they went one down - and they still applauded the team at the end (all of whom came over) despite an unexpected defeat.

Also in 2012, took a bunch of 18 year olds over to Kisumu in Kenya on a charity project, played a bunch of games against local teams.

San Jose Earthquakes vs Vancouver Whitecaps - MLS at a College pitch in 2011. Approx 7000 there.

It was a Wednesday night game and San Jose were singing "is that all you take away" !!!

First "kick of the evening" - US thing where a celebrity kicks the match ball first - Joey Chestnut - World Record Competitive Eater ! You couldn't make it up!!

In 2019 myself and a friend happened to be in Montevideo, Uruguay and were planning on attending Penarol v Defensor that weekend, as Penarol are the biggest team over there and are known for an atmosphere. By chance one evening we were walking round the city and stumbled across Defensor's stadium, not realising they were also Montevideo based. Outside we met a couple of friendly lads having a classic Uruguayan bbq who invited us to join them at the game in a few days. Ended up getting on club organised coaches with a police escort directly into the away end. Game was very feisty, and I was constantly looking over my shoulder as Penarol fans were trying to climb over the barbed wire fences to get at the away end. Cracking stadium and experience.

Malta vs Bulgária in a 0-0 friendly on Boxing Day 1982 at the TáQali stadium. I was 13 at the time and made it to and from the game on my own across the island from Mellieha on the 1950s green buses.

The previous week I had listened to Wolves vs QPR on BBC World Service as we lost a 2nd division top of the table clash 4-0. Beat them 2-1 at home the end of the season as we coasted to the title by 10 points.

Was in Murcia for a friend's wedding and we noticed there was a I think 4th division, maybe lower ground round the corner from our villa and they were playing the day after the wedding. We planned to go, and a lot of the wedding party came with, so there's about 30 British and Irish lads at this essetnailly Spanish non league game. 1 euro beers, pumpkin seeds. Home team 3-0 down at half time. Bring on a lad who scores a 7 minute hattrick, including directly from a corner.

"Why was he on the bench???" we asked amidst second day drinking limbs. Well, it was cos he had about ten minutes of puff in him. Home team basically had to play with 10 men to hold on for a 3-3 draw. Legit one of the best days of my life

Carlisle - we lost.

I once watched CSKA Moscow at home and saw an Argentina team with Messi, Aguero, Di Maria and co beat Brazil at the Beijing Workers Stadium, but neither of those are as remote as Carlisle.
