Shame they have to play that postponed Brum game, which means a lower round will be played after all these other later rounds.

Agree; that's why it's stupid yank talk.

Round is the correct term and it isn't an Americanism.

Each group of games in the fixture list encompassing all teams in the league is a round.

It allows for assignation of each game to a group of games regardless of when it is played.

So for example if a game from the first weekend of the fixture list(Round 1) is postponed to the end of the season it is still grouped together in results with the fixtures from the first weekend as a set of results.

I used to pour scorn on “Americanism” but read an article some years ago on the subject. The article said many expressions were words in use when settlers first went to the Americas. Therefore, on many occasions they are using the traditional terms and it's us that have changed our manner of speaking.

I doubt they had round 10 of the NFL season in the 17th century though...

If it were truly Americanised the season would last only 18 weeks, Stormzy would provide half-time entertainment, and the winners would be declared world champions.

The cringeworthy American term isn't round. It's "game week". The only thing worse than that is replacing matchday with "game day". Actually there probably are worse things. I need to think about something else quickly before some of them occur to me.
