Players we should have got rid - way before we did 14:45 - May 12 with 4889 viewsnumptydumpty

On similar topic as one staring who we should have kept, who did we hang onto way too long

I suspect this list will be way longer than the ones we should have kept

Appreciate contract lengths, wages, sale prices etc mean more difficult at times to get rid !!!

First on, I would have off loaded one particular player who had a realistic chance of getting rid to receive a fee and sellable on similar or better contract elsewhere.

Stand up Mr Joey Barton !!!

Was at QPR for four seasons, one on loan but a bad egg, creating even more dysfunction at a bad time to be a QPR fan.

Unbelievably divisive character and not nearly as good as he himself believed himself to be !!!

Tony Roberts

This isn't just a "Roberts was crap" judgement - for a few years the jury was out, he would have occasional decent games, pull off a classy save etc.

But by 1995 at the absolute latest (when we'd had a whole season without Stejskal), when we still had a good squad in which he was clearly a weakness, and when we were about to get the Ferdinand money, we could have replaced him for a fraction of the money spaffed on Hateley etc.

PS Barton was one we never should have signed in the first place, all the warning signs were in plain view.

I suppose the real "hanging onto" players are ones that were actually decent, but where we kept them to a point where we had to sell them for peanuts because the contract had run down, when we could have got a decent price and reinvested a year or two before.

Those are tough to call.

Maybe Trevor Sinclair, who we could have flogged for big money (then) when we were relegated? We kept him as part of the bid for immediate promotion, and failed badly.

But then we'd have never have had that goal against Barnsley.

Zesh Rehman. Preferably about five minutes before we signed him.

I mean Albert adomah is unfortunately one, still popular but if he had signed off with that goal
Keeping us up last season that would have been a better way to go. Especially as he lost his legs a long time before this season

We love a self flagellation don’t we!

Getting rid of players is hard. It’s very rare I’ve seen us give us a player a new contract and thought ‘why the fck we done that?’

It's got to be Joey Barton.
Anyone else who embarrasses their employer like that would be sacked immediately.
Instead, we send ours on holiday to the south of France for a year on full pay

What a weapon.

Running a close second has to be SWP, who was terrible, Imagine having £50k odd per week to spend on players now?

100% this.

He was pony and having him in central defence for all that time coincided with our slide into Div 1 from which we’ve never really recovered.

OK it wasn’t entirely his fault but I mainly blame him

227 appearances over 10/11 seasons under how many managers?
POTY in 98. That requires some explanation doesn’t it. Maybe he wasn’t as bad as some remember.

Probably very dedicated on the training pitch.

He got 22 appearances in 95/96 and I just remember him being bullshit for all of them. Given that we had Maddix and Macca, I don't know why Wilkins insisted on playing him.

Also, POTY for 97/98 which wasn't exactly a vintage year for us. Finished 21st (thanks to Jamie Pollock) and legitimately our best player that season might have been Mark Kennedy on loan (for 8 games).

I'll get the popular ones out the way, Lee Cook, Gareth Ainsworth, Martin Rowlands, Dan Shittu....All had stopped playing a long time before their final contracts expired, all seemed pretty much done as Championship level players by that time as well. Ainsworth you can argue was involved behind the scenes. Cook and Shittu should probably have never come back really. Lessons learned.....Or maybe not. Adel Taarabt? Left in the end for nothing....Should we have cashed in at some stage before that?

Then there's the Peter Ramage, Hogan Ephraim, Gary Borrowdale class who were never very good and got moved aside by new signings, and saw out their contracts, club perhaps should've had get out clauses in place - Did we learn from that?

Then there's the Andrew Johnson, Bobby Zamora Injury prone types and the Nedum Onouha, Park Ji-Sung, Junior Hoilett flatter-to-deceive types, who IMO sit somewhere between the last lot and the next....

Next is the piss-taker class.....Steven Caulker, Leroy Fer, Luke Young, Jack Robinson, Sandro, Armand Traore, SWP, Kieron fcking Dyer (Who we signed for 1 year, watched get injured after 4 minutes, and gave another year to) - In a proper organization, these people would've been kicked out, dismissed.

I don't think Barton makes even the top 20 in my time, so amazed that he does with people who can remember the 90's decline with Ned Zelic and all that. I don't think he was in the piss taker class (What I gather is he was very much in with the Hills and Derrys), I don't think he was very good either, but I do think we were a better team with him in it. MOTM in the play off Semi home to Wigan, one of our better players throughout that season. Even Clive, who I think would admit has a strong dislike of Barton, gave him 6 MOTM awards in his final season (relegated) with us. Goes to Burnley, wins another promotion and their POTY while we're pissing around with Chris Ramsey as Head Coach and Onouha as the Captain, both apparently too afraid to speak up and call out the piss takers. Terminal decline ensues.

I'm still impressed by how much Nedum's bollocks have grown since he retired!
He was an absolute pussycat on the pitch, but all of a sudden he's speaking up about all the terrible things that happened while he was playing.

Also, I think you need to look at Barton in the context of one of the biggest earners in the club history. Then work out if it was worth the very average footballer we got in return. Then balance that against the disruptive force that he was.

The only thing that Barton has ever got right is calling out Jeremy Vine, but even then he messed up asking people to crowd fund his libel case...

Context context context. The club was paying all kinds of money to all kinds of losers around that time. I don't think Barton was any more badly overpaid than SWP, The Ferdinands (Take your pick) Luke Young, Loic Remy, Chris Samba, Granero, Vargas etc. Every single one of them had Uncle Tone's pants down. Simple as that.

As for the disruptive force. You could argue Marti Cifuentes has been our disruptive force this season. Sometimes you need that. Maybe we could have done with that at the start of this season, rather than Ainsworth making excuses for them. We saw Chris Martin do a bit at the end of last. Someone has to do it at some stage. Jimmy Dunne bollocking Lucas Andersen just before he went off vs Leeds. About time people spoke up for themselves.

All the stuff he does now has nothing to do with QPR, so I don't think it's relevant....Like saying we should have kept Vinnie Jones on a bit longer cos he turned out to be good in Mean Machine

Yeah because Samba Diakite and Jermaine Jenas would have got us up that season, wouldn't they?

I was highly cynical of Barton at the time - Of course I was, I read this website - But with hindsight I really don't think was anywhere near as bad as people make out
