Keyboard/windows/typing question 07:05 - May 11 with 3114 viewscheeseydane

Does any clever sod know how to type those little plus and minus signs and little numbers that stand next to the chemical symbols when you write chemical formula ?

Im putting the finishing touches to my ecology report to be handed in tomorrow and am stumped.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Its usually hold control button and type a number combo, same as accent letters.

If you Google keyboard symbol codes list, or something to that effect you can find a list of all the number codes for each symbol.

Hold down Alt key then press 241 on keypad - Hey Presto!! ±

Try all other numbers for other symbols e.g. ½ ¼ is Alt 171 and Alt 172

You could also look at the symbols when in Word and simply cut n paste

Yeah ive tried this. But those are not the symbols im after.

If you know chemistry for example, water is H20 but the 2 part should be very small and sunken slightly below the other letters.

Thats what i cant figure out how to do.

You need to use the subscript or superscript option within fonts. If you go to the Format Font area you'll see it in there somewhere depending on what software and version you're using.

Try subscript in word or superscript. I think it is Ctrl+=

If you have word go to the home tag and look across the top for font after the bold, italic etc you should find an icon with an x followed by a sunken 2 as you want

TYpe H click icon then 2 click icon then O
