Farage unhappy about Le Pen's defeat 10:39 - May 8 with 4200 viewsrunningman75

So a fascist unhappy that a fascist lost bemoans liberal democracy. I said to leave voters including Labour leave there was no way I could support a campaign headlined by bigoted xenophobia. Farage seems to be loved by the common person who fail to see their love in with dangerous far right politicians such as Le Pen.

Lots of nasty stuff from Farage and other reactionaries.

Leave.EU, pressure group set up by Nigel Farage before referendum, tweets that French people had 'rolled over' like they did in 1940
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/may/07/british-brexit-supporters-insult-e

The root of their disappointment is that they were hoping the EU would spontaneously combust (which it would have done if France had left the union), and that this would wreck EU unity in the Brexit negotiations.

The stuff about Merkel is a bit rich in the context of Farage's rush to prostrate himself at the feet of Trump and wangle himself the position of ambassador at Trump's court.

Thanks to the rise of dangerous lunatics like Trump and Farage it seems we have become fatigued, and incapable of being shocked. Sleepy, even. But we should be in no doubt that yesterday's result on France was momentous. If it was a Premier League match it would be a "massive, massive game".

And, to my mind, a beautiful and inspiring result.

Watching TOTP the other day I was astonished to realise that Farage had a hit with Blue Hat For a Blue Day after he left Haircut One Hundred

Looking at the interweb I see that I am not the first to notice this...

I love people who go on about the French being a bunch of tarts when it comes to WWII. They all seem to forget the devastating impact of having WWI fought in large part on French soil, a war that had ended only 21 years before the outbreak of WWII. They also seem to fail to understand that defending a shared border with a more powerful adversary, is a bit trickier than defending an island where the shortest crossing is 20+ miles. That invading someone across fields is a bit simpler than organising a fleet to transport your troops and hardware across a sea. And that we rather benefited from the involvement of the USA in the latter years of the war. Next time we go to war, I’d love to see whoever sent that tweet sent out to the frontline, to see just how fuc king brave they were when there’s a chance of them getting blown to fuc k. Tw ats.

The French generally do whatever the Germans want them to do, absolutely no chance their voters were ever going to rock that boat.

Anyway, good luck to them. Hopefully the Right out there will accept defeat with good grace, just like the Remainers have over here.

A good opportunity to give this book a plug. Alastair Horne's "To Lose A Battle, France 1940"

https://www.amazon.co.uk/product-reviews/B008MYLP46/ref=cm_cr_dp_synop?ie=UTF8&r

Courage and misfortune, but also incompetence and complacency. Another factor behind the capitulation was the terror of revolution among the senior ranks of the Army. Based on the events of 1870-71, Weygand and Petain were keen to settle with the Germans to prepare for battle with the real enemy, their own people.

Trouble is, Macron is basically a walking TED Talk, with a background in finance, and with business-as-usual centre-right policies that will inevitably lead to falling living standards, job losses, and more resentment, paving the way for Le Pen and chums to walk it next time.

The fact that about a third of the country voted for a Nazi is deeply troubling.

Disaster kicked down the line, basically.

I know that plenty of people want there to be a comparison, but there's no comparison between here and there. Any comparison would be with the BNP which barely exists now, if at all.

UKIP had i think 18% of the vote in the polls before the Tories promised a referendum on the EU, that pushed UKIP down to about 13% in the last election, so far as I can recall anyway. Now they are down to what - 6%? And they are sinking fast.

The French NF has been around for years and are probably at their strongest at the present time. 34% of the vote is not an inconsiderable percentage for a single party, but who would actually want them running France or any country? 34% is more than double - nearer treble what UKIP achieved with basically one posh bloke banging on about the EU. The French have to do something about this - 34% is too many for what is basically a single issue. Even 18% was too many over here, which is why we had a referendum. The French should bite the bullet and have a referendum on the EU and then move on. Until that happens it looks like being a recurring shambles.

What's far more chilling is this.

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2017/may/07/the-great-british-brexit-robb

Taking back control? Brexit re-ordained by American hedge fund billionaire with links to Putin to facilitate a Trump victory aided and abetted by Farage, Banks and Gove's old SPAD.

Ya, it's come to something when a corporate-sponsored candidate winning is a good thing.

As for the future, this maybe a high-water mark or another step up for fascism. Could be either.

If you read the manifesto's without a political party name on the top, excluded the positions on immigration / EU, you'd swear Runningman and FDC er al had written much of Le Pens paper. Macron may come from a socialist sympathetic background, but his could have been conceived by the majority of fiscal conservatives in Britain or the US. I'd also consider his Trade Union position to be a (not so)back door attempt to seriously weaken the champagne socialists.
Anyway, let's get back to reality - bloody good vintage wine at the moment.

As I am now resident in Limousin, if you want a French based view of the vote carry on reading.

The polls were predicting this sort of outcome since before the 1st round, 2 weeks ago. The only thing that might have derailed the predicted outcome was abstentions. Even with historically high levels of abstentions it made little difference. Our department voted 71-29 in favour of Macron.
The main gripe with Macron, according to our French neighbours, was his lack of experience. He'd never been elected before, he'd only had 2 years as an Economics minister in Hollande's government. And he is only 39. Others were very suspicious of his background as an investment banker.
According to his programme, he is socially liberal but economically slightly right of centre. In many respects he is not a million miles away from the Blair government that was elected in 1997 and 2002.
His problems really start now, His En Marche movement has only been in existence for about a year. There are important elections coming up in a few weeks and he needs to get as many deputies as possible. Even then, he will probably have to do a fair bit of horse trading with both right and left. He could well find that vast swathes of his proposed programme meet considerable opposition.

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the Earth all one’s lifetime. (Mark Twain) Find me on twitter @derbyhoop

Also that between 1935 and 1938 France was keener than us to put together anti Nazi alliances, but as the French economy suffered much worse than the British one in the great depression she was deeply dependent on British support. Several times, notably at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, Leon Blum was called to London and told if France's actions caused European war Britain would stay out, as well as Laval the foreign minister often working to water down deals so as to seem less aggressive towards Germany. David Lloyd George even said Hitler was justified in his own aggression because of France's actions.

Yet because they got overrun we give it the big one - despite the fact we were very fortunate Churchill became PM because numerous members of the government, notably Lord Halifax his main opponent for the position, were very keen to settle with the Germans

Indeed. The National Socialist German Workers Party was er disbanded in 1945. Ever get invited to dinner at the Socialist family dining table? Nationals sit one side, Internationals sit the other, shout and roar across the room from soup to nuts, completely disrupt the meal for everyone else. Only they can tell the difference between themselves, rest of the diners have a headache.
