Lol. Obvious, isn't it? Why else would right wing governments, which tend to protect the minority rich/elite, ever get elected?

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

Of course this doesn't apply to the leaders of the "the Right" and the elites they serve; it just applies to the muppets who vote for them; put on funny uniforms and fight for them; buy into convenient myths of nationalism and chauvinism and then live their lives in the interests of their rulers.

However, so much of what we believe and think we know comes from how we are raised and (mis)informed; I think often the political postures we take have less to do with what might be called intelligence than with the ideological environment in which we live and learn.

Some people will blithely say "Oh well, no-one wants a radical alternative because they are all stupid" or "true socialism can't work because people are thick/selfish", but truthfully most people (all of us) most often do stupid things not because we're stupid but because we have never been taught how to question, how to think, or that we might believe that the world might be organised another way or any number of other ways.

You must be in Wales then.

I wouldn't take any chapter or verse from psychologists. They're all nuts, they have to be to empathise with their subject.I had a row with one over betting and short selling shares. His argument being if you preferred instant gratification to long term investment/burgeoning relationships, marked you out as a psychopath. So I said don't be a khunt and kneed him in the bollocks.

Considering the study confuses authoritarianism with being right-wing I wouldn't take it too seriously.

Political clock face = Left of centre at 9 o'clock, Right of centre at 3 o'clock, Populist at 12 o'clock and Authoritarian at 6 o'clock.

My own leanings would be about 1 o'clock... strongly populist and a bit right of centre.

If that makes me less intelligent than the communists (7 o'clock... strongly authoritarian, left of centre) so be it...

Exactly. There's a recent trend for anything people don't like to be branded 'right wing'.

Right-wing politics is all about small government and personal freedom.

Blair increased the size and powers of the state massively, but apparently he was right wing too for some unknown reason.

I also have a hard time believing that the professionally unemployed who vote for Labour in their droves are more intelligent than small business owners who tend to vote Conservative. But hey the study says so, so it must be true.

Surely they are the smartest of all!

I didn't bother to read the article as studies like this tend to be faily meaningless anyway. The data, if they have any, will most likely be be trimmed of the extreme values and then slightest difference between the two sets would probably then be declared as a trend. So What? Fact is it matters very little, what matters is who wins the elections not who vote for them and loads of people don't even bother to vote in the first place. If the study was pure propaganda then judging by the comments it didn't really work in that sense either.

Don't care if they're intelligent or not as long as they get the ball in the bloody box and someone sticks it away.

"Right-wing politics is all about small government and personal freedom"

Well that would be a huge generalisation. Whilst I agree with you that authoritarianism is done at least as well by the Old Left in all its guises as the Right, you ignore the fact libertarianism has been hugely important for many "leftists" over the last two centuries.

The thrust of this article was that people deemed to be less intelligent tend to be prejudiced in ways which correlate with the appeals of right wing political movements.

My own point of view is that anybody, intelligent or not, who looks at politicians of any stripe and thinks they see people who are genuinely going to help them has a mental problem.

Authoritarians of the left and the right have pretty much equally proved themselves to be murderous bast*rds; so, what can we conclude? What is required is more liberty not less; more democracy not less; less of a role or no role at all for politicians and politics as we have known it.......

Up to this point libertarians of right and left may well be in agreement. The problem; the important dispute after that is a very practical one: how should the economy be organised to ensre the survival of the liberty we value? For me the answer is democracy in every community and every workplace; an end to capitalism and bosses forever....... for the libertarians of the right? I don't know.... the freedom to let the poor starve; the freedom to live in their fortresses whilst others fight over the scraps?

I have strayed a long way from the rather simplistic point in the article, but I have done so to make a point: political and philosophical questions should be discussed with an open mind rather than dismissed with prejudice; that surely is the mark of an intelligent position.

Kropotin says

"My own point of view is that anybody, intelligent or not, who looks at politicians of any stripe and thinks they see people who are genuinely going to help them has a mental problem."

Thanks Kropotin in what was 2 lines on your own piece you have narrowed down the true reality of politicians, they are all careerists fundementally feathering their own nests and gaining money and power in a variety of ways, they are maybe interested in trying out some ideas and even a bit of social engineering.
What they are not is interested in is doing anything for the people who "think" they are voting them into power.
If the Parties like you and think you will happily toe the party line and that of the greater good then you will have a great chance of getting a safe seat eventually in an area your party is powerful in.

If your not then you hage next to know chance of getting into power.
