The betting column returns ahead of QPR’s televised clash with Southampton on Sunday.

Welcome back to our weekly trawl through the markets. It’s been an extended summer break for this column but we’re hoping to ramp it up again over the coming weeks, after all you don’t really want to take your hard earned Christmas shopping do you? Brian Power Don Samioni are on hand with a look at the markets for this weekend, as ever we’ll be keeping a running total as the weeks tick by.

So, we enter the third year of the betting column, and can I say what a pleasure it is to be back. Last year was amazingly – although only marginally – a profitable season. I’m hopeful that I can build on that platform with a few more John Parts (Darts) and Tilda Swintons (Movies) and a few less, erm, no hopers who featured in practically every other bet I offered up.

Well, I’ve summered fairly well thank you for asking – I had a major success at work, managing to persuade the boss to name the main room at our new Notting Hill office the ‘Stanley Bowles Suite’. Although, perhaps not regrettably, I failed in my attempt to re-brand the downstairs lavatory the ‘Doudou’ room. OK, poor and hardly original toilet jokes aside, let’s concentrate on this weekend’s sporting action – and where better to start than the St Leger at Doncaster .

There is no doubt that amongst this impressive field, Frozen Fire is a worthy favourite – however, my selection is LOOK HERE. On this type of ground, which I believe he’ll handle well enough, his ability to stay on will see him cross the line first. I’m avoiding the fixed odds market on this one and backing this horse on the spreads in the form of a £2 buy @ 19 on the 50-30-20-10 index (Sporting). For those not versed in this type of market, there is a maximum profit of £62 here if he wins and a maximum loss of £38 if he finishes outside of the top four.

So this leaves me £12 to play with and even at odds on, the 4/5 available about QPR is standout value and I’m convinced we can buy money here. Invest £10 with BET365 based as much on the ineptitude of the Saints than the gradually building momentum of Rangers.

The remaining £2 I’m going to place on WES BROWN to open the scoring at Anfield at a juicy 66/1, which is available generally... Good luck chaps.

Welcome back and let’s hope for better times around this year both on the pitch and on a punting front.

I have not done a lot of research for this weeks’ bets as the world was meant to end last Wednesday at 8.30 am due to scientists in Geneva trying to recreate the Big Bang experience. They should have gone to Dicey Rileys in Neasden on a Saturday night as there are loads trying to recreate a big bang which is quite tricky after eight snake bites, four pints of stout and six vodka’s – and that is just some of the women.

We get a taste of what it would be like playing in the Premiership this week as our game is switched to four on a Sunday for Sky coverage. Our visitors despite winning at Derby (who doesn’t?) are struggling and lost at home to Blackpool on their last outing. I think we will win but will go for a first goal scorer with Dexter to score against his former club.

On the Horse racing front depending on the rain this week we have the St Leger meeting at Doncaster and in the feature race we will have a £20 win on Look Here available at 4/1 at numerous establishments

Finally I am going for a £10 accum on the football with West Ham 21/10, Peterborough 8/5 and Leeds 6/5 at Bet 365 which pays £177.32
