Penton referees QPR v Watford

Clive Penton, a pretty regular visitor to Loftus Road in recent years, is back in W12 this Sunday as QPR take on Watford.

Queens Park Rangers v Watford
Referee: Clive Penton (Sussex)

Assistants – Buck (Kent) and Laver (Hampshire)
Fourth Official – Mackrell (Hampshire)

Respect
• noun -
a feeling of admiration for someone because of their qualities or achievements.

So far this season Penton has shown 48 yellows and four reds in 14 matches. Six of those have been in the Championship, including Watford’s 2-1 home defeat by Plymouth, and in those games he has shown 14 yellows and no reds. Last season he showed 98 yellows and two reds in 30 matches including QPR’s 2-2 draw with Preston at Loftus Road. His rating of seven in that match saw him finish joint fifth on the referee league.

Referee: Clive Penton (Sussex) 7 Didn’t seem to get too many decisions wrong, the main mistake he made in the game was not awarding Preston a penalty in the second half when it looked nailed on. Could have clamped down on the Preston time wasting more in the second half but then did punish them with four minutes of added time that proved to be crucial. We scored a goal with the last kick, or head, or the match the last time he was here as well so long may that continue. LFW Preston Match Report

In 2006/07 Penton showed 105 yellows and four reds in 29 matches and that included our 1-0 home defeat by Coventry and thrilling late win against Luton at Loftus Road. Penton did not fair nearly as well in those two games, allowing Lee Cook to be kicked off the pitch in the Coventry game and awarding two penalties in the Luton match. He averaged just four over the two games which meant he finished in joint 26th on the table that year.

Referee: C Penton (Sussex) 3 A shocking display and the worst we've seen in W12 this season. He got the simple things wrong and didn't offer players any protection. In fact he gets most of his points for turning up as he offered nothing when on the pitch. He blew up when advantage would have been more appropriate and his linesmen were a disgrace at times as well. Poor show Mr Penton. LFW Coventry Match Report

Referee: C Penton (Sussex) 5 Failed to book Langley when he spent 20 minutes begging for a card, allowed Luton to engineer a two minute delay before the penalty was taken and missed Talbot's nasty challenge on Camp because he was watching the ball instead of the incident. Luton have also questioned the penalty decision but both spot kicks looked pretty blatant to me. LFW Luton Match Report

In 2005/06 he booked one and sent another off as Rangers drew 0-0 at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

Ref: C Penton – 7 The best ref I have seen so far this season - and that's not to say we haven't seen some bad ones!! The game flowed well and he managed to keep his control of the game without getting silly with the cards. Well done that man. LFW Sheff Wed Match Report

Prior to all of that he was in charge for a 2-1 defeat by Crewe, a 4-0 win against Barnsley and a 2-0 win against Peterborough all at Loftus Road and a 3-0 LDV vans defeat at Yeovil. QPR have a record of three wins, three defeats and three draws. He has booked ten QPR players and 20 opponents and sent two QPR players and one opponent.

Elsewhere this Sunday there is a rare collection of the bad, mad, sad and incompetent scattered around the place. Plenty of our old friends are in action – Stuart Attwell has Cardiff v Plymouth, Mike Riley has Birmingham v Swansea, Trevor Kettle has Doncaster v Burnley and Kevin Friend has Blackpool v Wolves on Monday night. Lower down I notice Mike Dean has Notts County v Rotherham although I cannot immediately bring to mind a high profile mistake he has made to bring on that demotion.
