Lancs need a win tomorrow to stand much chance of escaping an immediate drop back to Div 2

Finished today 89 runs ahead at 203-4, Prince out just before the close for 85

The difference between first and second division cricket is growing much wider. Northamptonshire and to a lesser extent Lancashire have both struggled to make the step up. As with all struggling teams we haven't scored enough run and apart from Tom Smith the seamers have struggled to take wickets. Taking a step back might not be a bad thing as this will allow Lancashire to blood a few young players. Hameed scored in the Under 19 series against world champions South Africa, Rob Jones, a leg spinning all rounder and Mahmooq a seamer (who attended Matthew Moss High School) also played. Other, slightly older players such as Livingstone and Griffiths are decent prospects, as is Davies the wicket keeper.

The retirements of Hogg and Prince and the probable retirement of Chapple will be big losses. Kabir Ali is frequently injured and Reece, Brown and Agathangelou have failed to convince in the four day game in the top order. The less said about White and Proctor the better! With Buttler being awarded a central contract and the retirement/departure of other players their should be room in the wage budget to make some decent signings. Nathan Buck, a younish seamer who has played for the England Lions in the past is a reasonable signing. I would like to see an established top order batsmen (possible as overseas player) signed to guide the younger players, although Junaid Khan would cause carnage in division two.

Whatever happens it should be an interesting close season with lots of comings and goings.

I'll admit to not being an expert on the current situation at Lancs, but wasn't the last relegation the opportunity to do what you've said? To be in the same position again a couple of years down the line indicates the infrastructure wasn't focused on properly prior to the last campaign in the second division.

Poll: Greatest Ever Dale Game

Yes and no.

Lancashire already had an ageing squad when we got relegated three seasons ago. The gaps were already evident then, namely being two batters short and an aging seam bowling attack with little depth. The legal battle alone to gain permission to redevelop the ground cost over two million, coupled with the actual cost of redeveloment the playing budget has been significantly reduced for a few years. I believe it is now back to a competitive level.

The unexpected retirement of Hogg and the unsuccessful signings of Jarvis, White and Ali, coupled with the failure of Reece, Brown and Agathangelou have led to the current situation. With a number of decent earners coming off the wage budget it provides the opportunity to make some shrewd signings. The gulf between the two divisions is also significant. Division one teams have much greater depth in all areas. Katich masked serious deficiencies in the batting lineup as he could be relied upon to score over a thousand runs at an average of over 60.

Three years ago the young players I mentioned in my previous post would have been in Year 11 so not really pushing for a first team place. The second division is a suitable environment to blood a number of youngsters, let them get some experience before promotion to division one.

You could say that an opportunity was missed after the last relegation, but the younger players this time round are of a better standard. For a Dale related analogy it is like comparing Godin Adabaki and D'Arcy O'Connor to Jamie Allen and Scott Tanser.

Indeed it is. That is the big difference Yorkshire have so much more quality and depth. Someone like Leaning who wouldn't make their first team if all players are available would arguably be Lancashire's best batsman. Young players like Rhodes and Carver will make a big impression over the next few years. Being able to release a player like Rafiq, who would get into most other sides in the country is a sign of talent available at their disposal.

The problem at Lancashire is that they've tried to cut corners to save a bit of money. Chapple appointed as coach still as a player and with no other experience in coaching before, yes before people say Keith Hill didnt have any experience in Mens football before taking Dale job but atleast he had some at youth level. Also not bringing an overseas in to replace Katich's runs has helped Lancashire either. Another saving money tactic. As with Livingstone, Griffiths they have been around for a bit now withouth really doing anything major. Hamseeb ,Mahmood and Rob Jones they need to be given at least a go. This season is one that Lancashire should forget. Getting to the T20 final doesnt make up for Winning one game in 50 over competition and a potential relegation.

They need to bat 15 overs in a T20 manner and get some quick runs and pray that we can take 10 wickets in 2 1/2 sessions.

If they don't have a go early, it will end in a draw more than likely.

Somehow we need to get another 150 by lunch and hope the spinners come up trumps

Thought we should have selected Parry instead of Proctor

Although to be fair didn't Proctor bail the team out with his runs first dig?

You feel Buttler is the key today. We have to declare early enough to largely take the draw out of the equation. We need Sussex playing to win. Try and set them 225 and then go balls out for it - a draw is no real use, although Durham beating Middlesex would be handy. Can't see Durham going down, can see Middlesex imploding.

well they're certainly going all out for quick runs...

Croft has just gone 6.1.6.4 and Buttler has 33 of 33 with a couple of 6s

163 ahead

...aagh Buttler OUT!

Done his job though. Croft got to keep this up. If he is still there going at this rate we can declare in an hour.

Lancs all out, target of 251 set. This isn't going to end well.

If I hadn't seen such riches, I could live with being poor

Also, losing Peter Moores to England was a major blow.

Even with Moores as coach we still would have struggled.

All over.. Lancashire lose by 7 wickets.

Sussex now safe, Middlesex beaten by Durham but have a game in hand over Lancashire.

Looking grim.

Middlesex are struggling, 9-1 facing a Somerset total of 523/9d

Obviously a great batting pitch, but if Middlesex gain less than 13pts from the fixture Lancs can still leapfrog them in the final game by beating them at OT

Maybe the ECB will stand up to kicking racism out of cricket and impose a 104 point penalty. Would be justice served and warning to others.
