After 10 years spent travelling 4 billion miles, space probe Rosetta has released the landing craft Philae to descend onto a comet 300 million miles away. Due to touch down around 4pm, with confirmation around half an hour later if all the potential hazards have been avoided.

Probably the biggest event in space exploration since the moon landings 45 years ago, and a lot of the technical development was done in the UK.

Anyone else keeping track of this?

Tis good stuff indeed.......surely it's gonna smash up on landing though?

The surface is like a quarry.

Do hope it goes well.

Arf!

But surely they wouldn't try to fool us by making a giant rubber duck this time?

Now lets hope it can drill its way into the surface and secure itself. By comparison, the technicalities of this operation makes the moon landing look like child's play.

Fantastic achievement.

Possibly - one of his testicles flew into space after an air shot

Rosetta only has another 1 billion miles to go to reach the Planet upon which some bury fans are living on.

So, it's over and mission accomplished, after almost 12 years and having travelled 8 billion km to catch up with, then track comet 67P on it's journey through the solar system at temperatures of nearly -100C

The technology and ingenuity required to do that is astounding

It's lander Philae was lost, then recently found hidden beneath a cliff

Final picture (of more than 100,000) taken 10 seconds before impact

Disappointed you didn't give 67P its full name

How long till an insurance claim for a crashed probe citing whiplash?

Up the Dale - NOT for sale!

I thought 67P was quite apt - cheap at the price

Last picture beamed back to earth shows strange flashing lights followed by dust clouds - it'll be the ambulance chasers
