Surely if he had a new deal from the Dale with better wages, it would strengthen his hand in negotiating with potential future employers , or is this not the case? |  |

Unfortunately that's not always the case. For example Player A could be worth £500,000 however due to him only having a year left on his contract he may be available to an interested club for £250,000. Now Player A's agent would argue that he has saved his player's new club £250,000 by not signing a contract, so consequently might ask for £100,000 in signing on fees. That way everyone (except some may argue Player A's former club) is a winner. |  | | |

I mean this in a nice way but thank you never made it the member of Parliament for Rochdale ... You wouldn't have the first idea in how to rip us off in your expenses claim!
Sports contracts are like binding agreements in favour of the selling club in that the buying club has to buy out / purchase the existing contract in place.
By not having one, the player is in a stronger bargaining position. If one is in place then the seller has the upper hand. |  | | |

1mark1 - its all down to the level of the player and how wanted he is - e.g. think of Donnelly here with 1 year left and Hendo on the same. Hendo is wanted for good reason so as the contract gets nearer the end his position gets stronger as he knows he can be a free agent and demand more as a free transfer, signing on fee, wages etc as no initial outlay from buying club.
Donnelly would be getting more desperate to find a club and a job as he was unlikely to be snapped up (apart from Tranmere for some reason) and as such would be kean to move to a longer contract on maybe lesser terms - Dale may even help this by a mutual release, which may involve a pay off to get rid of him.
Putting it simply - if your good and wanted less years on the contract the better and vice versa :) |  |

You didn't expect the prospect of us selling Henderson to fill supporters with glee though did you? Every player has a price no matter how many times the manager or Chairman state 'Not for sale' and let's face it we do have to sell players to balance the books.
Let Hendo run down his contract now and help us to establish ourselves in League One for another season. What he does then, he does with our blessings, hopefully he decides to stay. Yesterday was a good day. [Post edited 2 Sep 2015 2:43]

That wouldn't have made any difference. Le Fondre was sold because we had a very urgent bill to pay to the Inland Revenue. His move to Rotherham financed that. Simple economics. Thankfully, the club is in much better shape now and that would be extremely unlikely to happen. |  |
