The List of Fullbackery 15:57 - Feb 25 with 2934 views442Dale

Players used at right back this season:
Rafferty
Cannon
Vincenti
Thompson
McGahey
Henderson

Left back:
McNulty
Tanser
Bunney
Rafferty
RNL
Kitching
Taylor
Andrew
McGahey
Cannon

It's definitely been both our achilles heel and our biggest plus, because when Rafferty and Bunney have been used there we have been excellent.

When Raff and Bunney play there we have two of the best attacking fullbacks in the league. One has been removed through injury, the other through Hill's bizarre decisions and formations.

We've had two runs of seven games without a win which has bookended our season. Those fourteen games have seen us get 6 points.

The 18 games sandwiched in the middle saw us collect 42 points.

During those 18 games, the full back positions were shared as follows (games played in brackets):
Right back - Vincenti (1), Thompson (1), Rafferty (16)
Left back - Bunney (16), Tanser (2)

The game Thompson started at RB saw Rafferty come on at half time to play there.
Bunney received that silly yellow and got a ban to allow Tanser to return against Walsall, then when Bunney returned at Gillingham he played further forward with Tanser still at LB.

He is. As is Rafferty being played in his best position.

In the 14 games mentioned, Rafferty has been at right back in only 6 of them.

This ever-increasing list made me wonder if Rhys Bennett might have ailed our woes slightly had he not been released in the summer. Proficient at centre-back, full-back and defensive midfield - 3 positions we've had trouble this year filling gaps. Of course, he didn't play much last season and hindsight turns even the blindest man into a seer, but it strikes me that one thing we've missed this year is that utility man who can fill in across a number of positions.

Stags fan I work with says Bennett has been one of their most consistent performers this season, albeit in the division below. Actually said he's been much better at centre half than right back and reckons they'll struggle to hold on to him this summer. Not sure about that but I was surprised we released him, versatility is a virtue.

Afraid, despite many strengths, Keith Hill has blind spots about some players who don't meet his 'stiff upper lip' values. Works great when getting our players to never give up - 2 - 0 down against the Blades; but works against us when an excellent versatile talent like Rhys gets frozen out - given less game time means poorer performances thus justifying him being released. This season has been crying out for Rhys Bennett.

It was a strange decision at the time. It looked even stranger early in the season before Keane's arrival. It now looks like it was an error of judgment because of the reasons mentioned in this thread, many of which were noted back then, and events since have backed that up.

Bennett was far from perfect and there's an argument that injuries will have played a part in the decision, but there's little doubt he'd have been a better option than some chosen in various roles recently. Plus we'd spent a good length of time developing him as a player, it was a strange move so maybe there are other factors we aren't aware of.

He's even played at left back a couple of times...

Maybe Rhys wanted more than what Hill was prepared to offer him? Just because he was released doesn't necessarily mean he was surplus to requirements.

There may well have been discussions, but Eastham and Lancashire were on the list of those offered new deals, Bennett wasn't.

He's obviously kept his general fitness levels high, and what a difference he made today

Get Davies back, Raff fit on t' other side and, although McGahey did ok today, the balance in the side will be restored and god help any teams who aren't up for a game for the rest of this season - we can only keep playing and see what happens now

Would be more than happy with a back four of Rafferty, McGahey, McNulty, Bunney from here on. If Keane is fit, maybe stick him in alongside McGahey because the need for a right/left footer combination at CH is given far too much emphasis.

Hill on GMR: "For me he's the best left back in the league. For us to to secure him on an extra year's contract is really good business and we did it while he was injured, but he is the best left back in the league as far as I'm concerned"

Without wanting to detract from your stats at all, they are aided by

Joey B not playing at left bsck at the beginning, before Keane and Davies joined, both of who' improved our team at front and back greatly.

Joey B did not play when we had our injury mare.

He has been awesome in that spot however, with no shadow of a doubt and boy did we miss him when injured.

One of the first names down, whoda thunk it 12 months ago.
