Koeman Urges Fans To Focus On Supporting The Team
Thursday, 23rd Apr 2015 16:24

Speaking ahead of the game against Spurs Ronald Koeman knows that his team need the fans concentrating on supporting them rather than being negative towards Mauricio Pochettino.

Ronald Koeman is hoping that Southampton supporters focus all their energies on getting behind his team as they face the most important game of the season so far. The Saints manager knows that should his side lose then Spurs will be in the driving seat and Saints will be favourites to finish 7th, however a win will put his side right up there.

“If the fans are supporting the home team that’s the best what we need and what the manager needs and what the players need.

“It has to be respectful but that’s all about the fans and I can’t change that.

“That’s the feeling, the message of the fans, and you have to respect that.”

A clear message from Koeman to all Saints supporters at the game to concentrate on being right behind the team and that means all the players in it, Saints are now at the business end of the season and need to win crucial games like this and there is no room for getting on the backs of certain players as has happened at times this season.

Good try Ron but there will be a fair few who spend their whole time not watching the match but watching MoPo instead. A message to those 'fans': He doesn't care and he will interpret the hostility as a compliment. Totally ignoring him would be better - he would hate that!

There's been a lot of games this season (more than in previous seasons) where it's been really hard work to get big numbers singing in the Itchen North stand. The frustrating thing will be that on Saturday the levels will be up considerably because of Pochettino's return. All we need to focus on really is drowning out those Spuds who like singing OUR song!!

Maybe, rather than barracking MP, we should be cheering RoKo at every opportunity, just to show that we really do appreciate a loyal manager, rather than a disloyal one! Personally, I will not be giving MP any emotion, as far as I am concerned he is in the past and does not deserve any respect or any reaction.

There isn't any point in singing rude ditties about Mr Pochettino as he doesn't speak English does he, so he won't understand.

Oh sorry, I forgot, he learned over the course of the summer break didn't he!

From the Guardian today:

"Southampton fans should show Pochettino respect

Mauricio Pochettino thrives on grudge matches and recalls the derbies he relished playing in back in Argentina when his Newell’s Old Boys side took on Rosario Central in clashes so bitter that the players had to lie down on the floor of their coach on the way into the stadium for fear of being pelted by opposing fans. So any hostility shown to him by Southampton fans on Saturday on his first return to St Mary’s since defecting to Spurs is unlikely to bother Pochettino. Far better to greet him warmly for doing well for the club for a season or, if that doesn’t mesh with your concept of fandom, shun him until the final whistle, whereupon, if Southampton have won and thus gone a good way towards finishing above Spurs, the home crowd could point in unison at their former manager and give a Nelson-from-the-Simpsons style “haha”, repeatedly. Whether Southampton will depends to a large degree on how well Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane do against the home side’s defence, which has been the biggest area of improvement under Ronald Koeman this season. If Toby Alderweireld is fit, that would be an obvious boon. And if Roy Hodgson is in attendance, he might like to compare and contrast the performances of the teams’ left-backs and ask himself what he was thinking last month when he seemingly ranked Danny Rose above Ryan Bertrand in the England pecking order."
