One of the reasons for that, apart from the fact that Smallbone wrecked our midfield, was that they didn't run as much or try as hard as the youngsters did to get the ball. Adams, especially, was just ambling around nonchalantly expecting others to do the hard work, whereas the starting eleven were all running their socks off and working for each other. Yes they played loads of kids but still had Van Duke, MacCallister, Gapko, Gomez, Konate and Elliot on the pitchat various points.
We missed some great opportunities.
We played really well for big chunks of the first half.

To be fair to him, apart from their poor finishing wasting good chances to put us 2 or 3 goals ahead, the starting eleven played very well. It was the substitutes who let us down badly. Smallbone really shouldn't play for us any more. He is a big problem in the centre of our team.
In his post-match interview, even Klopp commented on the difference: "Southampton's midfield played very well in the first half." [Post edited 28 Feb 22:15]

Honestly you'd have to say Mara wouldn't be a starter in Liverpools U18.
And hopefully we would get some Chances against a Mixture of Liverpool Reserves and their U18 Team. Well, in the end that Shows how far we are off, and that there would be a reason to hope we won't get promoted, as there are many signs that there would be an embarrassing season ahead.

The comments in this thread are spot on. We played very well UNTIL the substitutes came on. Considering the fact that the substitutes are regular first team players, it's disappointing, to say the least, that they were nowhere near as good as the players they replaced. | |

All the others were either substituted or came on as subs.

Yes they fielded loads of kids but they are kids playing for one of the top 3 sides in Europe and we are a fourth place team in the Championship who are out of form and played a second string side.

Mara on the wing is pointless - we saw that in the first half against Watford in the last round. In tbe middle he has a chance, but the way Danns took his opportunities compared to us says it all.
Smallbone...he's OK if everything is going well. Reads the game well, gets in good positions, links up the play. But he's only got that one mode and when the pressure in one from the other team it's not what we need - summed up by his awful pass for the second goal. And there's something odd about his expressionless face. Never see him smile. Never see him get agitated or frustrated. Or angry. Maybe if you're Pirlo, you can play the game in a state of relaxed contentment. But he ain't Pirlo. | |
