As one Swansea observer said at times its death by a thousand passes. It’s all very well citing Barcelona and Man City but both those teams have world class players that can turn possession into clear chances very quickly. Without them there is a danger that possession turns into sideways or backward passing that becomes dull to watch and allows teams to defend against easily. We shall see but if Martin wants his teams to play like Guardiolas then he will need top players to make it effective.

This is true. If we stick to one style of play, with no plan B, other teams work you out. If you have Haaland upfront with Stones and Dias at the back you win game regardless. If we don't score goals because we miss, miss miss, and keep passing and passing, the fans will get restless.

We've had possession football for the last few years. Ralph knew the way to stop conceding was to have the majority of the ball. He also knew we couldn't win by scoring a lot of goals.
We MUST carry a goal threat or it will like the PL. Other teams knew we would pass but wouldn't hurt them.
If they know we can score it'll keep the opposition from getting too brave.
I really don't want to see more endless possession without any penetration.

In itself possession football isn't a bad thing if you have players who can: a) retain the ball under pressure and pass to players who have found pockets of space. b) identify openings and create chances in the final third. c) convert those chances that come along. I guess the question is - Have we got those players?. Last season we definitely didn't have a team capable of doing that to an appropriate standard so possession became very slow and predictable with mistakes at the back. The assumption is we'll have much more of the ball and control the games like Burnley did for the most part last year. Massive change from Nathan Jones and Luton who was also an ideal fit for Saints apparently.

Yes, even City have a plan B. Look at the FA cup final. They scored twice. The first was absolute route 1. The keeper hoofed it up to Haaland and Gundogan picked up the second ball. After the game one of them commented that they have practiced that tactic. The second was a set piece routine. Of course they did lots of passing as well but that didn't get them anywhere.

BTW, in the same game United scored from a penalty gained from a cross in to the box. Their other best chances also came from crosses on to the heads of their bigger players. Not much passing involved in any of these goals.
