No Bids For Oxo - Not Good News
No Bids For Oxo - Not Good News
Monday, 4th Jul 2011 10:40

All reports say that Saints havent had a bid yet for Alex Oxlade- Chamberlain, but perhaps this isnt good news.

Although the first reaction of most Saints fans to the news that there are no bids on the table for Chamberlain would be one of relief, the fact is it probably doesnt represent good news, in some respects it would be better to get the future of Saints most valuable player done and dusted sooner rather than later, so that Nigel Adkins is able to formulate his plans for eext season now and know exactly how much he has to spend and what positions he needs to spend in.

With the season now a little over four weeks away time is running short and it would be in our best interests to be able to sort this situation out now so we can hit the floor running on August 6th.

What we dont want to happen is for it to drag on to the eve of the season or worse, right to the transfer deadline itself, when this happens clubs tend to panic buy in a replacement to placate their supporters and often it proves folly as the wrong man is signed for far too much money.

Whether its best for Oxox to stay or go will split the Saints supprt down the middle, some would say that Oxo would be a potent weapon in the Championship and i couldnt disagree with that, however otherswould counter with the fact that if we got £10 million for him, buying in 4 quality players with that money would add far more to the team and i wouldnt argue too much with that either.

In many ways its a no lose situation for Saints apart from if it drags on and on

Any Manager/Chairman combination should take the scenario with Chamberlain into their plans for the forthcoming season. Sure as you say Nick it doesn't make life any easier, but then who said managing a football club would be easy.

Why would we want to bring in 4 players as you suggest.Nigel said at the weekend he would like to bring in a couple of players to supplement his squad.
I believe he bought Fonte in January as a replacement for Alex in case he was sold.
You sound like the lttle boy who has been given some birthday money. Let's spend it staright away.We only need to buy players if they will enhance the squad,NOT because we have the money

Again lets turn a positive piece of news into a negative. Nothing new here

This didnt turn anything into a negative, it just mentioned that it would be far better to get it sorted now rather than let it drag on.

As for how many we need, if Adkins feels we need a couple now then if we sold Oxo we would need three, so not that far off the four, that i incidentally said we "could" buy not that we "Should"

Too many negatives on here, Nick you were wrong with your could and should, you actually said: ( if we got £10 million for him, buying in 4 quality players with that money would add far more to the team and i wouldnt argue too much with that either.) So don't try and make yourself right. We don't need 4 players or even 3. Oxo should'nt even come into the equation,Nigel knows he's almost certain to go so he would have already considered his next move. It's a squad game so oxo will only be a small part of that- if he was injured mid season, would you rush out and replace him? me thinks not... So lets get behind the boys without second guessing every eventuality. It just causes arguements..C.O.Y.Rs

Those of you that simply assume that Saints are willing to move on any taented youngster for cash have got it all wrong. Previous management may well have brought about a negative attitude towards the club's players and perhaps itsa not surprising considering the damage done to morale vy the dark lord as he is affectionately knownby most of us. Its also true that in the not too distant past we were a small club, a minnow struggling for survival in the old first division where we had no right to be but somehow refused to be relegated thanks to a very astute management due in Reader and Bates ,reinforced by a talismanic god of a player called Le Tissier. With a name like that he had to be from the gods.
But thats all in the past and some of us still need to re-adjust their mindsets to the new Southampton and its equally talismanic chairman from Switzerland.
Especially the Ugly one it seems who seems to want rid of our young lad with almost indecent haste.
Cortese has it right though. Its just not in the boy's interest to move on - he needsto play first team football in an atmosphere which will be encouragement in itself. That is how stars are made.On the football field not in some smoky boardroom where they will slap some ridiculous price tag on him and throttle his career before it has begun. Think before you speak Ugly. Do you really think that even if you got ten million for Oxo you could realistically replace him/It would be virtually impossible and |Cortese s strategy as regards players is spot on keep the best talent like Llalana, Aaron Martin and Lambert and Schneiderlin and promote from within with players like Luke Shaw Ward-Prowse, Jack Stephens and Sam Hoskins on the fringes of the fisrst team already.
