Saints Linked With Wolfsburg Playmaker
Tuesday, 26th Nov 2013 09:10

Although Saints manager Mauricio Pochetino has indicated he wont be rushing into January's transfer window, the club is being linked with a forage into Germany.

Saints along with Arsenal are being tipped to make a move in the January transfer window for Wolfsburg's Brazilian playmaker Diego who is making noises in the press welcoming interest from Premier League clubs.

However what could rule out Saints is the players age Diego will turn 29 in February and that doesn't quite fit the profile that Nicola Cortese likes to see in a player, preferring to have younger players who can not only be tied to long contracts but who would have a resale value at the end of them.

The player himself has had a chequered career after arriving in Europe from his home country club of Santos, he joined Porto but found life difficult there on the pitch and after only one season joined Werder Bremen where he found life much more to his taste and after three seasons moved to Juventus for a fee reputed to be around £21 million.

But he was not a success at Juventus and just over a year later he was sold back to Germany and Wolfsburg for a reduced fee of around £14 million.

His initial time there was fraught and after being told he would not be playing in the final game of his first season he stormed out of the team hotel, leaving Wolfsburg one man short on the bench for a vital relegation crunch game to decide whether they would stay up in the Bundesliga or be relegated, they won the game but Diego was castigated and loaned to Athletico Madrid for the following season where he enjoyed a good season.

It looked like he would spend 2012/13 in the reserves but he knuckled down and forced his way back into the team where he has remained since.

Internationally Diego has played 33 times for Brazil, however the last of those appearances came in 2008/09 and he has not played since.

Now he will be out of contract at the end of the season and seems to be looking to attract a big payday from Premier League clubs, hence his comments to the press in the last couple of days, certainly he is doing his homework mentioning that Adam Lallana is a big talent, however although Saints could probably get him on the cheap the three things working against him are as mentioned his age as well as his chequered past littered with clashes with several of the clubs he has played for, in the past our Chairman has tried to steer clear of players who are known to be trouble, however he did break that doctrine in signing Osvaldo, so perhaps Saints might go for him, but the third thing and perhaps the main one that would mean this is merely paper talk is the fact that Saints are blessed with players in the centre of midfield and in James Ward Prowse they have a talent that could be far more beneficial to the team than the Brazilian.

Yes, we need a replacement for Ramirez since we seem unable to get him to replicate the form that presumably persuaded us to bring him here in the first place.

Personally I do think that Ward-Prowse has great potential, but I don't see him having the qualities to fill the role of playmaker for some time yet. I think we may be getting a little bit ahead of ourselves in lavishing so much praise on his passing and crossing. On the other hand I am very keen, whenever practical, to give British talent every opportunity to flourish. Trouble is I can't think of a player that we could reasonably expect to attract who is British. Best that I can suggest is the Frenchman Cabaye from Newcastle who Arsenal apparently almost got for £10m last summer.

Not sure about this guy Diego who sounds as though he could be a bit troublesome to the squad ethic, on the other hand he doesn't sound as though he will cost us a large fee if his contract is in its last year.

Difference with Osvaldo was he'd played for Espanyol, hence was well known to Pochettino.

This guy was at Athletico for some of the time that MP was i/c at Espanyol, so presumably he knows something about him?

Barely any Brazilians settle and play well in the premier league. Move on.
