Caulker In Saints Sights
Friday, 4th Jul 2014 09:04

Cardiff City's Steven Caulker could be about to be enticed to St Mary's as the club look to bolster their defence options.

Cardiff City may have gone down but central defender Steven Caulker was one of the highlights of their brief stay in the Premier League, Caulker who signed from Spurs last summer for a fee of around £8 million played in every game, indeed every minute of every game scoring 5 times and at 22 is seen as one of the promising youngsters in the Premier and could be looking to add to his one England cap won a couple of years ago.

Certainly one admirer is former manager at Spurs harry Redknapp who has already agreed terms with Cardiff but as of yet has not been able to get the player to put pen to paper whilst Caulker weighs up his options.

One of those options is Saints who will face opposition from Everton and ironically Liverpool, although perhaps that threat will ease if Dejan Lovren joins them.

The fee that has been agreed by QPR is unclear although it is understood to be not that much more than the £8 million laid out last year by Cardiff as the Welsh club look to trim the wage bill, this shows that Saints should not fear losing Lovren, yes we will be weakened if we do he is very much a player we would want to keep, ideally also bringing in the likes of Caulker, but it does show that quality is available at a good price and that what we Saints fans should look forward to is the players coming in, not those going out.

Buying relegated defenders? Are you sure that's a good idea?

I think Caulker would be a good signing for Saints but if Saints are really interested they would've made their bid by now rather than risk losing him. I'm sure Caulker would choose Saints over QPR so what are they waiting for? Unless they aren't actually that interested and doubt how good he is.

If Lovren goes then I think Saints will need two new centre backs. Lovren was so good he brought out the very best in Fonte and made him look like a good defender. I fear that with Lovren gone Fonte will look very average again.

what is pissing me off is the lack of action from the Saints Board and presumable as ever Les Reed is the man responsible.
This man has been a total disaster for Southampton football club, capitulation, empty promises, soundbites, and lack of results in the transfer market. Total shite.

The thing is that nobody really knows what the board and Les Reed are doing. Maybe they are just keeping their mouths shut and getting on with things. We are all nervous and we are all concerned and there is a tendency to panic but it is better if we keep our nerve for the time being. If Reed and the board are not up to the job it will become apparent soon enough when the season starts.

The board have had one hell of a job on their hands though. As soon as Cortese and Pochettino left the club has changed. No longer are there dreams of Europe and success, the big players want to leave to follow their dreams with other clubs, and in modern day football there's not a lot a club can do to keep hold of a player who is 100% determined to leave. Its bad business and bad for the dressing room to keep a player in the reserves until their contract runs out. What more can the board do apart from negotiate the highest possible price for a player which is what they've done with Shaw and Lallana.
All they can do now is make sure they buy the right players. With soon to be £100m to spend its absolutely vital they spend it wisely or we could be in a relegation battle next season.

Without sounding impatient, it's time we got moving in the transfer market. By the looks of it we will be losing at least 5 of our starting line up. In this case it becomes a matter of urgency that we get new players in ASAP so they can have time with the manager/ squad before the season begins. We don’t want to reach the stage where we are trying to bed a new team within a two week time frame. Look what happened to QPR.

Lets be blunt, if Cortese and Pochettino were still here and Adam Lallna was offered triple his wages and the chance to play in the Champions league and challenge for the title, he would have taken it, rather than stay and see if we could up the league position to 7th.

In reality were were the dreams of Europe and success certainly not in the Fa cup were our ex manager threw the game away as well as publicly stating he wasnt interested in the Europa league, if we had won the fa cup and were now in europe perhaps certaoin players might have stayed

I've come round to thinking the board/ owners are doing the right things. I'm not sure what sparked the wholesale exodus and I guess we might never know, but the board have got top money for each player so far and you can't block all moves and keep a number of unhappy players. That said they have now said no more sales and in light of the de-stabilising effect any further outs would have, this again is the correct decision. They have signed what appears to be a competent and experienced European manager and replaced the former manager and chairman who have lower themselves in a lot of fan's expectations since their departure; NC with his unchallenged control of the club and undeclared £29m debt and MP showing his true colours and a career sideways move, with some fans starting to question if he was a tactical one trick pony. What's more Saints are now back in stripes and will have no debt and a pot of cash to bring in some exciting players. I struggle to see the side of the doom-mongers. Just compare us to where we were last time we got relegated from the Prmiership. We're streets apart from that situation.

Would love to get Caulker. Why not get Marshall too from Cardiff whilst were at it. 20m for the pair, I think they would accept, and we would get a quality keeper and defender.
