Brendon Rodgers Forced To Justify Lallana Signing
Thursday, 24th Jul 2014 10:28

Liverpool boss Brendon Rodgers has felt compelled to justify his signing of Adam Lallana from Southampton in the face of criticism he has overpaid.

If ever Saints supporters needed justification as to why it was a good deal for their club to sell Adam Lallana to Liverpool for a fee in the region of £24 million then the words of Brendon Rodgers this week are just that.

Some sections of the Liverpool support have been questioning why the Anfield club have paid so much for a midfielder who in essence has only spent two seasons in the top flight , one of which was pretty nondescript whilst Real Madrid in comparison have signed Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos for a similar fee.

Liverpool fans are wondering why a player with little International& Premier League experience has cost the same as a player who has spent all his career in the German top flight, won 3 Bundesliga titles as well as the Champions league whilst even at the young age of 24 has already got 51 caps for his country and of course has now got a World Cup Winners medal.

On the face of it Real Madrid seem to have got the better player and for the same money leading Liverpool fans to think that perhaps their manager is paying over the odds for players whose careers have so far been distinctly average.

Of course Rodgers feels differently and is defending the signing expounding Lallana's skills and his beautiful balance.

Liverpool fans may tend to disagree though and although Rodgers claims he was not held to ransom by Saints over the £24 million fee, I dont think he will find many people who would consider Lallana a better player than Kroos.

Adam Lallana was a great player for Saints, of course he is a Premier League class player, but every player has his price and I think Saints will be far happier to receive £24 million for Lallana than Liverpool will have been paying it

We would be foolish to think they paid £24 million upfront. No idea what saints received with all the add ons. Brendon Rodgers comes across as a cunning shrewd man but too shrewd for his own good. Don't see him lasting too long at Liverpool.

You can't compare the two transfers though because Kroos only had one year left on his contract. If Lallana only had one year left we would have been lucky to have got 10mil for him.

Yeah if Kroos had 4 years left on his contract then he would've cost a hell of a lot more than Lallana.
If the Liverpool fans are complaining that they should've got Kroos instead of Lallana then they're getting a little bit carried away. I really doubt Kroos would've signed for them, he'd have only gone to the biggest of big clubs, otherwise it would've been a step down.
Liverpool have paid over the top for Lallana though, but most teams do for English players. I think you've got to praise the Southampton board for getting such a high fee. You can guarantee Liverpool's opening offer would've been for a lot less than £24m.
£20m+ is also very good money for Lovren. And £30m for Shaw was incredible. If Schneiderlin goes then it shouldn't be for less than £18m.
Need to see that money invested back into the club though. 3 or 4 quality signings need to be made.

Liverpool are trying to build a squad that can compete for the league title as well as go far in the Champions League. You need strength and depth in every position to do that.

We seem to be overlooking the fact that a large portion of the money went to Bournemouth,so Saints at best will receive £20 million.

Any truth to reports of Kroos saying his heart was always in Real Madrid because when he watched them last year he got goose bumps and he turned down Laugherpool because they "lack ambition"?
