Saints Need To Be Speedy For Gonzalez Wednesday, 20th Aug 2014 21:20 The latest player to be linked with a move to Southampton Football Club is Lazio's Uruguayan International Alvaro Gonzalez. Ronald Koeman has stated he wants a wideman and with Spurs refusing to play ball with a bid for Andros Townsend possibly out of spite, Saints have headed to Italy for Lazio winger Alvaro Gonzalez. Certain to be nicknamed Speedy should he arrive at St Mary's, Gonzalez is primarily a right winger but like many of Koeman's signings he is versatile and can also play at right back or in the centre of midfield as well. The two club's are believed to be close to agreeing a fee ad Gonzalez has missed a training camp with a move in the offing. The fee is likely to be in the region of £4-5 million and would be considerably cheaper than persuing Andros Townsend however with Gonzalez turning 30 in October he would not be one for the future, but with Lazio needing to trim their wage bill and Saints needing to complete the total overhaul of their squad it could still represent good value for money for Saints.
