According to various media sources Saints are about to annouce that they have signed Toby Alderweireld from Athletico Madrid.

This morning it looked like Saints were down in the pecking order to sign Tobt Alderweireld, Ronald Koeman had said he thought the deal unlikely and it seemed that it was now a straight battle between the two North East clubs Newcastle and Sunderland.

A few hours on though and it seems things have changed, Sky started to report that a deal was close for the Belgium central defender to join Saints and Skybet suspended bets on him , usually a sign that someone has inside information.

Some reports are stating that he will sign on a season long loan although whether that is with an option to buy is unclear.

At 25 Alderweireld has the right mix of experience and youth having played for Ajax in Holland before moving to Athletico Madrid last summer, with the Spanish side having a great season he found it hard to get in the side playing only 12 league games plus another 10 in the domestic cup and Europe.

His lack of games didn't effect his International chances though and h appeared regularly in the World Cup in Brazil

He fits Ronald Koeman's type of player in that although primarily a central defender he can also play at right back, whether its a permanent signing or on loan he will certainly be a quality addition to the squad
