Ralph Krueger To Address Saints Supporters This Evening ?
Monday, 17th Nov 2014 14:44

The Ugly Inside has learned that this evening at 4.55 pm a senior member of Southampton Football Club is set to address the Saints supporters on the radio.

Whilst we can only speculate on what will be said, we have been leaked the following speech which allegedly will be broadcast this evening.

"This morning the Saints Ambassador in North London handed the Tottenham board a
final Note stating that, unless we heard from them by 11 o'clock that they were
prepared at once to withdraw their troops from Staplewood, a state of war would
exist between us.

I have to tell you now that no such undertaking has been received, and that
consequently this club is at war with Tottenham Hotspur.

You can imagine what a bitter blow it is to me that all my long struggle to win
peace has failed. Yet I cannot believe that there is anything more or anything
different that I could have done and that would have been more successful.

Up to the very last it would have been quite possible to have arranged a peaceful
and honourable settlement between Southampton and Tottenham,, but Mr Levy would not have it.

He had evidently made up his mind to try to recruit our players and staff whatever happened, and although he now says he put forward reasonable proposals which were rejected by the Southampton board, that is not a true statement. The proposals were never shown to the board, nor to Katharina Liebherr, and, although they were announced on Spurs TV on Sunday night, Mr Levy did not wait to hear comments on them, but ordered his troops to cross the Hampshire frontier. His action shows convincingly that there is no chance of expecting that this man will ever give up his practice of using force to gain his will. He can only be stopped by force.

Katharina and I are today, in fulfilment of our obligations, going to the aid of
Saints, who are so bravely resisting this wicked and unprovoked attack on their
people. We have a clear conscience. We have done all that any club could do to
establish peace. The situation in which no word given by Tottenham's ruler could be
trusted and no people or club could feel themselves safe has become intolerable.
And now that we have resolved to finish it, I know that you will all play your part
with calmness and courage.

At such a moment as this the assurances of support that we have received from the
rest of Hampshire (excluding Portsmouth) are a source of profound encouragement to us.

The Southampton Board have made plans under which it will be possible to carry on the
work of the Club in the days of stress and strain that may be ahead. But these
plans need your help. You may be taking your part in the Northam End or as
a volunteer in one of the other stands. If so you will report for duty in accordance with the instructions you have received. You may be engaged in work essential to the prosecution of war for the maintenance of the life of the people - in factories, in transport, in public utility concerns, or in the supply of other necessaries of life. If so, it is of vital importance that you should carry on with your jobs.

Now may God bless you all. May He defend the right. It is the evil things that we
shall be fighting against - brute force, bad faith, injustice, oppression and
persecution - and against them I am certain that the right will prevail."

I did consider the dates but given that I was only changing a few words in the speech Dian think it would be disrespectful, sorry if anyone things it was

Nick, the original speach was the prelude to the death of some fifty million people worldwide. Some of those people were, I suspect, relatives and friends of existing Saints fans.

Whilst I am certain that you meant no offence I would hope that you will refrain from making similar types of posts in the future please.

SaintMark I am well aware of the significance of the speech and as I said i was very careful of how I adapted it, however humour surrounding ww2 has been around since the very day that speech was made, Hitler want a man with one ball he was a man who was murdering millions, but im sure this wasnt pointed out as the nation belted out the adaption of a popular song at the time

A host of comedies have been made about it and many comedians have earned good livings off it, Spike Milligan who was there and lost many friends and relatives wrote a series of humorous war memoirs that took the micky out of both sides

We should never forget either world war and the sacrifices made but we should also remember that the ability to laugh in adversity was the spirit that got us through it

This piece did not point fun at the war or the sacrifices, you would not believe the number of people I have spoke to who did not know this was adapted from Neville Chamberlains speech, they do now and a little more of the circumstances surrounding the original so something good has come of this piece.

Lastly back in 1999 10,000 Saints supporters belted out the Great Escape Theme at Selhurst park, some of them accompanying it on kazoo's, no one then thought that was disrespectful

Nick, thank you for your reply.

Whilst the content is a spirited defence of the original article I remain of the opinion that it would have been better not to have written it. I rather suspect that given the benefit of hindsight and in your heart of hearts you may well think the same also.Perhaps there being an international break with not too much to report in regard Saints matches had a lot to do with it?

Having said the above keep up the good work and we can then at least agree to differ on occasions!

No problem, difference of opinion is what good football conversation is based on.

The response o this article has been good but then one of the most popular footballing clips on you tube is the one of Hitler in his bunker ranting with english subtitles about the latest event in the footballing world

Cant believe some of the sanctimonious stuff being written in response to this. None of you lads ever chuckle at Dad's Army or be thrilled by some historically inaccurate war film. I remember a Monty Python sketch with Cleese as Chamberlain having trouble with the piece of paper.

Hitler might have had Nick shot for this - Churchill would have smiled....
