Ronald Koeman has hinted that Saints may not be that busy in the January Transfer window, however knowing the wily Dutchman we will just have to wait and see.

Ronald Koeman has suggested that Saints have not yet decided on their strategy for the January window,

“It doesn’t depend on winning or losing of the next month, it depends on the players that we have and we know that (Sadio) Mane has to play Africa Cup, Maya Yoshida will play Asia Cup.

“We don’t need a lot of players because I am happy about the players that we have.

“Maybe it depends on injuries that you need somebody to bring in but it’s too early to make conclusions about that.”

Wise words from Koeman but the reality is that he does know that the next month or so could be crucial in whether he strengthens the squad or not, simple mathematics suggests that even if you factor in the possible transfer fees to make the loan moves of Alderweireld and Bertrand permanent we still have around £20 million of the fee's amassed from our summer sales.

That being the case certainly one of the factors that might help make the club's mind up will be the league position mid January, if Saints are still up in the top four then they perhaps as much spending powered as anyone in the top ten and that being the case if invested wisely could be the difference in being able to keep up the form or fall away as sadly most o the pretenders to the big five often do after the New Year.

So Koeman is right there are. Lot of factors to be considered before the transfer strategy Is finalised and certainly injuries will come into it, not least the one that Jay Rodriguez is recovering from, but one thing we have learned since Koeman arrived is that h is a shrewd campaigner and he knows how to keep people guessing.
