Saints Sign Benfica Star
Monday, 2nd Feb 2015 21:53

Saints have confirmed the signing of Filip Djuricic on loan from Benfica for the rest of the season.

Saints completed their second loan signing of the transfer window after Mainz cancelled the loan of Filip Djuricic from Benfica enabling Saints to take the 23 year old on loan for the rest of the season.

Djuricic joined Benfica from Heerenveen for £4.5m in February 2013 and made 22 appearances as the Lisbon club won the Portuguese league in his first season at the Stadium of Light .

He then joined Bundesliga club Mainz at the beginning of the 2014-15 campaign and made 12 appearances for the German club.

Djuricic began his career at Serbian club Radnicki Obrenovac before moving to Dutch side Heerenveen, where he scored 26 goals and provided 28 assists in 111 games, in January 2010. Presumably this is where he came to the attention of Ronald Koeman.

He made his full International debut for Serbia during that period, going on to win 17 caps, but has failed to hit the same heights he enjoyed in the Eredivisie in either Portugal or Germany.

Like most of Ronald Koeman's signings Djuricic is versatile and ale to play in a number of positions either as an out and out forward, a winger or attacking midfielder and his arrival will bolster the squad at just the right time.
