Pump Up The St Mary's Volume Saturday, 21st Feb 2015 09:53 Saints supporters need to turn up the noise levels at St Mary's Stadium on Sunday and make it a truly special day. When we turn on the television to watch Liverpool play at Anfield in a European Competition we are always informed by the commentator of how special Anfield is on those "European Nights" it cannot be denied that over the years Anfield has witnessed some special games and that some of them have become special due to the way that the crowd has got behind their team and lifted them to glory, older Liverpool fans will tell you of the St Ettienne game in 1977, the younger generation will talk of Chelsea in 2005. Now the tables need to be turned on the Redmen, Saints supporters need to make Sunday afternoon one of those special days at St Mary's the volume has to be turned up to 11 and an atmosphere has to be created that drive our men on and make Liverpool's freeze. There is a precedent for this at games between the two club's Liverpool's visit on Friday March 16th 1984 was also a televised game and a packed Dell saw Saints destroy the League leaders and at the time were acclaimed the best team in Britain, sadly Liverpool had too much of a lead for Saints to overhaul, but we still finished second, that night though was magical and those there will put it forward as one of the best atmosphere's at the old ground. Another contender would be Alan Ball's first home games as manager on 14th February 2004, another televised game this time on a Monday, Saints scored in the first minute and never looked back racing into a 3-0 half time lead before eventually winning 4-2 as the snow fall got heavier and heavier, another truly magic evening. There have also been some great games at St Mary's January 22nd 2005 saw Saints win 2-0 with goals from David Prutton and Peter Crouch and it looked like Harry Redknapp might be the saviour after all, it would sadly be a false dawn. Two years ago Liverpool again arrived on the 16th March and were again despatched and again the atmosphere was superb proving that it was not just the Dell that had the monopoly on magical games. So now we need to make another St Mary's memory and we need to make sure that as a crowd we are firmly behind the team from the kick off and that we stay with them no matter how the game goes, The Northam End will keep going aided by the Kingsland Corner as will the Itchen /Northam Corner, but they need the whole ground to be up for it as well, not just singing and chanting but in vocally backing Saints, raise the volume and we have a far better chance of getting a result, even an occasional cry of "Come On Saints" is better than saying nothing. This is going to be a day that is looked back on as a pivotal moment in this season, which way that it sends us is still open for debate till Sunday evening, lets make sure that each and every one of us has truly epitomised the word "Supporter" Photo: Action Images Please report offensive, libellous or inappropriate posts by using the links provided.
