Daily Echo Stunt Enrages Fans
Tuesday, 3rd Mar 2015 10:37

The Daily Echo announced that Today's issue of the paper would have a poster in the middle to help Saints end their goal drought, but Saints fans on social media have not seen the funny side.

Im sure that the daily Echo meant well when they announced that Tuesday's edition would include a centre page poster depicting an arrow with the words "The Goal's That Way " emblazoned above, however Saints fans on social media are not seeing the funny side.

The Echo obviously hoped that many supporters would hold up the poster at Tuesday night's game against Crystal Palace and give the Echo some free publicity as well as raise a titter amongst the St Mary's crowd.

But Saints failure to hit the back of the net is seemingly no laughing matter judging by Facebook and Twitter with many expressing disgust at the stunt.

Comments include

"I certainly won't be doing this, sarcasm at its worst. Should be building players up not doing this. Daily echo poor form as normal in my opinion."

"Feck the Daily Echo and anyone holding the banner up!"

"Anyone thats around me holding that will get it taken away believe me !!!!"

Even the Echo's own comments section under the story had little positive from its readers.

"no , no , no it looked stupid when villa did it"

Although it did have the odd message of support.

"Remember to hold it the right way up depending on which side of the goal you are at or else it could get very confusing..........."

All in all a storm in a teacup, Im all for humour but I think this falls a little flat and perhaps the Daily Echo made a misjudgement here, however I don't think this will go down well with the Club and in this respect perhaps unwise from the Echo who spent a long time in exile under the Cortese regime.

Its not original and inspired by Aston Villa fans who produced arrows to encourage their own team to score during a recent drought.

But overall it is only a bit of fun and thats how it should be seen, personally I would not like to see anyone holding a copy, but it could cause friction especially if Saints do fail to score and as the game goes on the crowd becomes agitated, if this is the case Saints fans should remember its only a game.

But it's alright if us supporters do it? It's humour, and if somebody next to me had held up a poster like that, I would have pissed myself! As I'm sure the players would. Perhaps it might even take the pressure off them?

People who are 'offended' or 'angered' by this type of trivial nonsense have probably got too much time on their hands...
