Will Saints Benefit Or Suffer The Backlash From Chelsea's Exit From Europe.
Thursday, 12th Mar 2015 13:23

Saints go to Stamford Bridge on Sunday, but will they benefit from Chelsea's shock exit from the Champions League or will it be the case of Chelsea making us pay for the indignity they have suffered.

Perhaps the first thing is that Chelsea have had to play extra time on Wednesday night and whichever way you look at it that is something that does take its toll, especially on some of their older players, with the second thing being that their vunerability has been exposed and PSG showed that as long as a team is organised and resilient they can stay in contention so that when the chances come their way then if taken a result is possible.

Going into the game against the French side it seemed as though the Blues were starting to believe their own hype that they were invincible at Stamford Bridge, certainly that has been the case in the Premier League, but PSG showed that Jose Mourinho's men do have a soft underbelly you just have to expose it.

So from this point of view there are several reasons why Saints can go to Stamford Bridge and come out of the game with at least something.

But on the other hand Mourinho will be absolutely livid about his teams showing on Wednesday evening and it is unlikely that he will allow the complacency shown by his players to happen for a second game, he will be wanting to get the game finished early rather than giving us a chance to stay in it and cause a shock at the end.

The fact is though we are still facing a difficult task and football is a game when you can never predict anything with any certainty, that having been said i would still have preferred Chelsea to play that extra 30 minutes and be that little more tired than not and i would still prefer their confidence to be knocked by this exit than not, so overall PSG's win is a positive thing for us.

We still have a lot of work to do before we get even a draw on Sunday, but mentally and physically we have been helped a little and that can be no bad thing, perhaps it will not matter a jot, but when you play a team like Chelsea you need every little bit of help you can get no matter how small.

Even before last nights result our task was difficult, but I actually think their being knocked out and the manner in which Chelsea were knocked out has probably made our task harder as they seek to redress that result. But, we can hope.

The only effect for me would be on the ref - who will have his eye on Chelski behaviour.

I think a draw is possible if we defend very well but it is difficult to see us scoring many. If their weakness is from corners I have to say it is not an area we have exactly been banging them in from...
