Toby Showed His Commitment To The Cause
Sunday, 26th Apr 2015 18:04

Toby Alderweireld might only be at St Mary's on loan but his commitment cannot be faulted as it was revealed that he played against Tottenham Hotspur with a broken bone.

Saints fans have warmed to Toby Alderweireld this season after a series of composed displays for the side, however after being stretchered off at Stoke City last week many wondered whether that would be the last we saw of the Belgium International.

Certainly given that he was on loan with Saints it would have perhaps have been easy for him to cry off of the final games of the season especially now it has been revealed that he played against Spurs with a broken bone in his shoulder.

Whether Saints will be able to make the deal permanent is yet to be decided however Toby's dedication to Saints cannot be doubted after he played through the pain barrier against Spurs in a bid to keep Saints bid for European qualification on track.

"The game was hell. I was in so much pain. There is a little bone broken, but my desire to play was so big," he told BBC Radio Solent.

"I did everything I could to play and gave my all for Southampton even with a broken bone."

Alderweireld revealed he had seen a specialist, who told him "nothing can happen, it's only pain management and how far you can go".

The result left Saints in seventh place, but only a single point behind both Liverpool and Tottenham

Asked about their prospects of a place in Europe next season, he added: "We're are going to try, we played good football today and that gives us confidence.

"We will recover this week and then go at it with the full 100%.

If everyone plays with the same effort as Toby in the next few weeks then we will get that European spot.

That's the spirit ! Had Big Vic not been suspended though, I doubt he would have been risked. Still, fair play to him.

I'll be really sorry to see Toby leave if he does go back. He's not only a quality player but has the mental strength and the passion that we need
