Saints Closing In On Dutch Goalkeeper
Wednesday, 3rd Jun 2015 09:34

Saints are being touted as about to sign Dutch International goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg from Fulham.

Saints were linked with Stekelenburg a couple of months ago and with the uncertainty of just when Fraser Forster will be fit again to play and the Europa League campaign starting in two months they will be keen to get this position sorted sooner than later.

Whether Stekelenburg is a genuine target or just his agent touting him around is open to debate, being Dutch it seems the media love to link any of Koeman's countrymen with a move to Saints.

The same media report is saying that Kelvin Davis is now considered too old and Paulo Gazzaniga too inexperienced and that Saints are looking to bring in two keeper during the summer to cover the goalkeeping spot till Forster returns.

This suggests that it will be later rather than sooner that Forster is ready to make his comeback.

Maarten Stekelenburg could fit the bill for Saints having played a lot of games for Ajax and Roma before joining Fulham where it all started to go wrong and he also has 54 caps for the Dutch national side.

Playing second fiddle to Forster isn't a very attractive option for the former Dutch No 1 however much we might like to see him here. Unless we are not being told the truth about Fraser's injury - in fact we're not being told much at all about him.
