Saints are in competition with Tottenham Hotspur according to some media reports for a Portugese International from Sporting Lisbon.

Saints are after Sporting Lisbon midfielder Adrien Silva in the latest transfer rumour and if those reports are to be believed then they will have to battle Spurs for his signature.

The 26 year old who is described as a player known for his dribbling and passing qualities and described by a former manager as being the "complete midfielder who wets his jersey in every game he plays" has two years left on his contract and is valued at the £10 million mark.

Like International team mate Jose Fonte he is a late starter to regular top flight football and after spells on loan finally established himself in the Sporting Lisbon side in 2012/13, since then he has prospered and made his debut for Portugal in 2014 so far having won 2 caps.

Silva has friends in Saints & Spurs both camps having played with Erik Dier at Sporting.

“Jose and I have spoken,” The Sun quotes Silva as saying. “Southampton are doing well and his performances speak for themselves.

“It’s the same with Eric. He came through the ranks at Sporting and it’s good to see people you had contact with doing well.”

The Sporting star added: “There’s been a lot of noise this year about my departure. I’ve still got a contract with Sporting and the club has to be respected. But we’ve been waiting for the end of the season and now we’ll see what happens.”

This could be something out of nothing, however this would be the type of player Saints would be tracking and given our former head of recruitment is now at Tottenham it is inevitable that we will be looking at the same players this summer.
