Will Koeman Go Back In For Ron Vlaar
Friday, 26th Jun 2015 12:30

Last summer Ronald Koeman was reportedly trying to sign his former Feyenoord central defender Ron Vlaar, with Toby Alderweireld looking increasingly unlikely to come back to St Mary's will we target Concrete Ron.

It is being reported that Ron Vlaar has had five offers on the table with his contract at Aston Villa due to expire on Wednesday and speculation is that along with Newcastle, Sunderland and Besiiktas , Southampton are interested.

Of course Vlaar enjoyed a spell at Feyenoord under Ronald Koeman and he was linked heavily last summer although the fee quoted was enough to see Saints back off and bring in Toby Alderweireld instead, bringing in the Belgium from Athletico still remains Koeman's number one central defensive target but with Alderweireld looking likely to go elsewhere the Dutch manager will be considering other options and Vlaar although 30 will be one of them.

The issue will be that Vlaar did not have a great season for Villa last year and injury restricted him to just 18 appearances and his displays in those were not up to the standard of previous years as was shown in Villa's mauling at St Mary's, however on a free transfer he does represent a good option, although it will be a little worrying to have two central defenders the wrong side of 30 in the side.

So I would not be surprised to see Vlaar sign for Saints in the near future and again I think the Koeman factor will come into play.

Personally I would suggest that we would be better off spending big money on the Belgian, outbidding Spurs if necessary and make it an offer Athletico cannot afford to ignore. A proven player of his age is a much better bet than an unreliable and often unfit Vlar.

After all we have made c £36.5m on the sale of Clyne and Schneiderlein and so far only spent c £8.5m on the two new players we could really shock Pochettino and disrupt Spurs plans and still have c £10m to spend on a Schneiderlein replacement.

Am I right in thinking that in last seasons dealings as well as this season's so far we have quite a surplus on sales without the owner having to spend any of the original budget on players.

I also think we should offer Koeman an extended contract sooner rather than later, as he is very likely to prove himself to be comfortably our most successful manager!

agree with the above comment. Vlaar looked fairly poor last season (although playing for Villa will do that to you).
We have to do everything we can to keep Alderweireld - he's only going to improve next season - and while I don't really want us to buy Vlaar, getting a CB from abroad is risky

Pay Athletico and Toby what they want, haven't we got £40 left over from the TV rights?

Vlaar has No pace, so not the right option IMO.

I think Vlaar would make an excellent back up option for Fonte and Toby. Let's not forget this is the same Vlaar that represent Holland in the World Cup not too long ago.

I don't see why we can can't sign him on a free and prioritise Toby as our first choice centre half. It's going to be a hard long season and I don't think Maya or Gardos are good enough to fill in for Fonte/Toby when they're injured.

oh god no, Vlaar has become a tortoise! Just because he USED to be an international, doesn't make him good still. We probably will get him anyway because (a) he is dutch, (b) knows Ron and (c) cheap!

Bloody hope not. Doesn't really fit our profile of young and hungry. And frankly I've never seen him play particularly well. I'm sure we could do better.

I fear that Saints will adopt a moralistic stance over Alderweireld because of the original 'agreement' and not be prepared to offer what he's obviously worth.I say get real and start being brave( if it's not too late, after the departures).
I would worry with Fonte and Vlaar, Jose had an excellent season but he needs the right partner and as a pair I think they'd both be 'found out'.
