Caulker Reported As Having Medical At Southampton Now Wednesday, 29th Jul 2015 13:29 Queens Park Rangers central defender is reported on Sky Sports News as having a medical at Southampton this afternoon.
Saints appear to about to sign Queens Park Rangers central defender Steven Caulker on a season long loan with an agreement to sign him permanently for £8 million.
Caulker is an experienced player at Premier League level and will do a job at Saints and if Ronald Koeman can also land Virgil Van Dijk before the end of the transfer window it will give them real quality in the centre of defence.
Whether it will lead to permanent deal is unclear otherwise perhaps we would have done a permanent deal now.

why do you/the media keep thinking we are signing Virgil too? There is nothing but speculation in the press about this, no more or less than any other player. Is it a dutch thing?

Out goes Toby...in comes a player fans of both Cardiff and QPR have nothing good to say about. No option to buy either which suggests the transfer has no long term plan. The only way I can see this being good business is if we sign a top CB to partner Fonte and use Caulker as a squad player.

Cardiff & QPR were crap from front to back. They were badly managed and disorganised, so the entire defence (Cardiff's excellent keeper aside) looked terrible. Also, don't forget that Jose has a knack of getting the best out of his defensive partners. Caulker is young, strong and quick. I reckon he'll turn into a top player. Good signing in my opinion.

Relegated in consecutive seasons and we appear to be signing him, why? Truly, what does this guy bring to the party? I wish him well and I hope to be proved wrong but to me this piece of business has desperation written all over it.The Toby cock up may well come back to haunt us.

Personally think this is a good move. He is 23 and has had 3 seasons (117 aps) in the PL! Swanse and Cardiff Fans might not have good things to say about him but there management obviously saw something. At the end of the day it’s a loan, if he is no good we haven’t lost anything. I also think there is a good chance that VVD will come in. Not just because of the media but because of our track record. Buying players from Celtic fits for a good reason. Saints are willing to pay good money for players that bigger teams would consider a risk. Also VVD will not be cup tied for Europa group stages if Celtic sell him after Champions League qualifiers.

I work with a lot of Spurs fans that say he had the potential until he got to the first team. then it just never happened. Also, he is slow and needs a quick defense partner to play well.....oh dear

I'm a little sceptical about this but maybe playing alongside Fonte will help him. like others, I hope this isn't our last bit of business this summer - still need another CB

Playing alongside Jose may take him up a 'notch'. It's good as long as that's not 'it' !

I recall everyone moaning about ambition and not good enough when we signed Shane Long. A fair few have changed their tune now, so lets give the lad a chance. Think we will still sign another CB before the window shuts.

As long as we sign Van Dijk we'll be alright. Then we'll have Jose and Van Dijk as first choice with Yoshida and Caulker as back up. If Caulker is our first choice then I think we'll be in trouble. He's had a couple of dreadful years, not helped by the shite teams he's been in, but I have serious doubts that we'd get him performing at Alderwiereld or Lovren standards. I fully expect the club to sign Van Dijk in August though.

I think this is an excellent bit of business providing that we sign VVD. I think Caulker still has a lot to prove and will be an excellent replacement for Gardos. I still think in addition to VVD we need to sign Charlie Austin. It's soo obvious it beggars belief.

Six games in just four weeks, with four of them against sides also in the bottom six. By March we should be either well clear of danger, or even deeper in the sh*t. With Danny Cowley’s U’s still unbeaten, and looking stronger game on game, I’m sure it’ll be the former, but first we have to do our bit to consign Steve ‘Sour Grapes’ Cotterill’s FGR back to non-league. After our shambolic 5-0 defeat at New Lawn, nothing would give me greater pleasure, even if it meant losing one of my closest awaydays in the process.
