Wanyama Can Prove His Saints Loyalty By Signing A New Deal
Tuesday, 6th Oct 2015 20:50

Victor Wanyama was unsettled in the final week of August when Spurs tried their little tricks to try and lure him to North London, but now the Kenyan is focused on only one thing.

Victor Wanyama now insists that his only focus is Saints and that he has put the shennanigans of August behind him, speaking to the Daily Echo he said.

“I just don’t want to remember that situation,” .

“I’m happy to go in the pitch and forget what happened, so I’m really looking forward to putting good performances for Southampton.”

“Yes, sure, now I’ve forgotten what happened, I’m now progressing on my club and it’s been good, so I’m looking forward to putting in good performances.”

Fine words from the Kenyan who has backed them up with several good displays since returning to the team and certainly the supporters have been quick to forgive him, even though the timing of his "issues" that rendered him mentally unfit to play, certainly did not help Saints chances of winning through to the group stages of the Europa League.

One way that Wanyama could help make amends for that is to sign a new contract for the club, with nearly two years left on his current deal Saints are in no rush to sell and signing a new contract would not really affect whether Saints would or would not sell him in that period, but it would give him a substantial pay rise.

If Wanyama did sign it would be the final piece in the jigsaw for the supporters to truly forgive him completely, not to mention it would help show the club who are hovering again on some of our squad that Saints are a lot stronger as a club than they were when Liverpool ravaged us in the summer of 2014 and that our players can follow the lead of Morgan Schneiderlin who proved that a good grounding at St Mary's and being patient can often result in a better move than taking the first tin pot offer that comes along.

That is not going to happen in a million years. He will not sign a new contract with Saints unless we qualify for the champions league and offer him mega amount of money or by any chance, no one should come in for him. He is focussed now on us, because a. he has little choice, b. it suits him. His focus come the end of the season will be to do what Schneiderlin did, and get the move he so desires. Of course, there is a factor that may effect that. The club he desires may not be interested.

A1079: While I agree with you to a certain extent. My response is: why does he want to move in the first place? Why are we not hearing constantly speculation about Everton midfielders like Ross Barkley angling for a move?

Tottenham finished 2 places above us last season and Arsenal finished 4 places ahead of us. If they are paying better wages and offering a higher calibre of competitions then our board has to respond with an alternative. They could for example tell the player they are planning to expand the stadium and are aiming for Champions League spots in the next couple of years. They could also offer our best players better deals and try and build the team around them. That's common sense. But at the moment we're cashing in on best players and now our manager is saying to the press it's inevitable we'll lose our best assets. What does that signal to the players and the fans?

This topic should be addressing the board not the player. Players's have always been seen as disposable assets. They also know their career has a certain shelf-life and to be quite frank they're not going to spend their entire career at one club unless it meets their ambition.

It is the role of the board to meet those ambitions. Otherwise the player is well in his rights to move on.

He won’t sign a new contract while our modus-operandi is to sell our top players. Not sure it’s even in our clubs thoughts TBH.

Sadly, I expect Koeman to stay for his contracted 3 years only so why would he buy into a situation where all our best players would be locked in here for 5 years?

When inevitably he goes to a bigger club the first thing he'll want to do is come back here and poach our stars, so the shorter our contracts the easier and cheaper it will be for him. Feyenoord all over again.
