Jose Fonte should be fit to face Liverpool in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday after being forced off with a cut on his knee at Manchester City.

Saints fans can breathe a little more easily after Ronald Koeman confirmed that Fonte's substitution at the Etihad was more to do with the time that it would have taken to patch up Fonte's knee rather than the seriousness of it.

Fonte hd gone to the dressing room, but with Saints under the cosh, they could not wait too long for the issue to be dealt with so the decision to bring on Steven Caulker .

"That was the problem, we had to wait too long and you can't wait for ten minutes,”

But the Dutch manager is not too concerned that it will be a problem for the game against Liverpool.

"Normally he will be ok,” said Koeman. “I think he will be ok for Wednesday.”

Hopefully that will prove to be the case, but TV footage showed the cut was right on the front of the knee and this is the worst place to have it, in that with the knee constantly bending it makes it harder to heal.

Fonte may well play through the pain for such an important game against the Merseyside team, however it may open up the cut and he might need to miss the Aston Villa game next week to give it time to heal properly.
