Saints 3rd Best Team In Premier League In 2016
Tuesday, 12th Apr 2016 15:55

If the Premier League had started in January of this year Saints would be sitting third in the table and that has to give Saints supporters confidence in the final run in.

Of course the Premier League did not start in January so this table is only really of any use to give us a flavour of how Saints current form has been in that time.

You would not perhaps be too surprised to learn that the top two since the turn of the year are the same as throughout the season, Leicester City sit top still with 33 points from 14 games played and then come Tottenham Hotspur on 30 points also from 14 games.

Then it is Saints, they have 26 points from their 14 games played leading Chelsea who have two less points but a game in hand.

What this goes to show is how well Saints have performed since the New Year and that has to give them confidence going into the final five games

It shows that for all the hype surrounding Spurs, they have not performed that much better than Saints and indeed when you look at the fact that West Ham & Manchester united are also behind us, it shows we can have a bumper end to the year and should fear no one.

Not even Manchester City, they have a game in hand on us but have netted only 21 points from their 13 games, perhaps ultimately we have too much ground to make up, but we should not fear them when they visit in a couple of weeks.

Liverpool and Arsenal are also well behind, the Gunners have 20 points from 13 games whilst the Merseysiders have only 18 albeit they have played only 12.

Saturday's opponents Everton have fared worse than most being the fifth worst team, 13 points from 12 games is only more than Palace with 6 Aston Villa with 8, Newcastle also with 8 and Watford with 9.

What it also shows is how well Saints have performed since key player have returned especially Fraser Forster and how the season could have already have been far different should he have been available a lot earlier in the season.

Given that this period also saw much injury and suspension in the squad it proves that the depth of the squad has been immense.

So as we head into the final knockings of the season we have shown in the second half that we can hold our own against any side in this division, of the games left only Spurs have outperformed us in terms of points, if we now continue our form, the season might just have a great ending after all.

We've always been a good Jan-Dec team. There was one year in the 80s when we'd have won the league if the season had been over the whole year. We seem to find Aug-May a bit more difficult.
