Saints Could Trigger Winger's Release Clause In The Summer Thursday, 5th May 2016 13:21 According to the latest media reports Saints are waiting in the wings with interest should Newcastle United be relegated as they could then move to secure the services of Andros Townsend on the cheap. Andros Townsend only joined Newcastle United back in the January transfer window for a fee of £12 million, Saints were rumoured to be interested in signing him themselves back then, but they felt that the fee was a little steep and Newcastle United being desperate to avoid relegation were offering decent a salary and incentives to the player if he joined and helped them to do that. But should the Toon go Doon to type in the Geordie vernacular, then Townsend has a release clause in his contract that stipulates he can go for £8 million. But Saints will have competition from West Ham United for Townsend's signature, the Hammers tried to sign him both in January and last summer but found that Spurs were unwilling to sell to a London rival especially one that had been in in conflict with them over the Olympic Stadium, likewise Saints had a bid knocked back, more to do with the issues surrounding Tottenham's courtship of Victor Wanyama than the money being offered. But with Townsend now at Newcastle neither Saints or Spurs have the figure of Daniel Levy blocking their path and are now free to chase Townsend on a level playing field. Townsend has once again found his form at St James Park, scoring a great goal at St Mary's and the winner last week against Crystal Palace.
