There was only one club left that Saints had never finished above in League football ! Now there are none as the final missing piece in terms of the league table record books was completed.

In our 131 year history there had remained one team that we had never managed to finish above and that was Liverpool !

They were the team that had finished above us in 1983/84 and astonishingly in 41 seasons of being in the same division as them since our first league encounter 51 years ago in 1960/61 season in the old Second division as it was back then, we have never managed to finish above them in a season up until now.

Now that has changed and although we won't be sure of our exact position in the Premier League till this evening when Manchester United have completed their fixture against Bournemouth, Liverpool already know that they will finish 8th and will be below us.

Given the success Liverpool enjoyed in the 1960's - 00's whilst at times we were at best mid table and at worst fighting relegation with only the odd periods of top ten challenges it is surprising that our record against the Redmen is fairly decent.

Of the 82 games played up to date we have won 24 of them, drawn 19 and lost 39, in modern day terms that's an average of over a point a game and given the domination that Liverpool had in the top flight for around two decades that is quite impressive.

But what is more impressive is that we have finally overtaken them, for many Saints fans that will be looked upon as revenge, especially if Liverpool fail to win the Europa League and are left next season without a place in Europe.
