Player Review 2015/16 Victor Wanyama
Sunday, 29th May 2016 09:13

Victor Wanyama was probably the most talked about Saints player in 2015/16, at times he could be magnificent at others suspended or just plain sulking.

I'm surprised that Victor Wanyama is so desperate to get to Tottenham Hotspur and re unite himself with Mauricio Pochettino, the Kenyan spent one season at St Mary's with the Argentinian and at the end of it Saints fans were not completely convinced he was the man for Saints midfield, don't get me wrong most thought he was good, but he wasn't top quality.

Indeed many preferred Jack Cork and in the first games of Koeman's reign Wanyama would often find himself rotated with Cork, Wanyama was the man you needed when you had to defend, but going forward he was not as good as Cork.

But the style of play under Koeman suited Wanyama and in 2014/15 he truly showed the fans what he was capable of and made himself first choice in the side meaning that Jack Cork saw the writing on the wall and left for Swansea.

Saints fans had high hopes for wanyama at the start of this season, he was seemingly ready to truly make that step up, indeed who can forget the rendition of "The Mighty Kenyan" when it had it's first airing away at Vitesse in the Europa League.

However within weeks it was being changed to the Greedy Kenyan as Spurs did their unsettling tricks and Wanyama fell for the hook line and sinker and threw a hissy fit when Saints stood firm.

This was going to be the blueprint for the season, something was wrong in Wanyama's head, when he got his head right he put in some great displays, but when he didn't he was a liability.

His three sendings off where uncalled for, all where of a similar nature, an over the top tackle in an area and a situation where it was not needed.

This meant he spent a lot of the season suspended and although this was not good for Saints, it did at least mean that Saints fans saw that the team could win without Wanyama and that we had the personnel to replace him.

All Saints fans would love the news that Wanyama had signed a new deal and committed himself to the club, but I fear that is not going to happen, you have the feeling that Spurs have kept in touch with him and are ready to pounce and that he knows that and therefore is not going to sign.

That will be a shame because I feel Wanyama is better suited to our style of play than the North London Soccer Chickens, his game is about winning the ball, their game is about all out attack, breaking quickly and getting the ball forward and he is not the man for that sort of game as Morgan Schneiderlin found out this season after his dream move to Old Trafford.

So I think Wanyama will soon depart, when reviewing this season it's hard to give a definitive score, in some of his games he was a 9/10 and he really showed what a player he can be, in others he was non descript, in some he was uncontrollable and in the rest he was just not there due to sulking and suspension.

Sadly I feel that we have seen the last of Victor in a Saints shirt, the way in which he will go is not going to be nice, not just because there will be that hint of underhand unsettling by Spurs, but for the way that their actions have disrupted the player meaning that he could not give us the performances on a regular basis that Saints fans deserved and indeed he was being paid to do.
