Saints Likely To Lose Out To Crystal Palace For Berahino
Monday, 18th Jul 2016 16:34

The local media to Crystal Palace are reporting that Selhurst park looks to be the destination for West Bromwich Albion striker Sadio Berahino.

A year ago Sadio Berahino was unsettled by Spurs according to his club, his relationship with the Baggies and their Chairman never recovered and he has rejected overtures to sign a new deal, with a year left on his contract West Brom now have no choice but to try and cash in for the biggest fee rather than see him walk away next summer, although they would be entitled to a development fee for him unlike Saints with Wanyama.

That is why West Brom can hold firm, with more cards to play than Saints had with Wanyama they can hold out for top dollar as Berahino will not walk for free next summer.

Ironically this could mean that his destination will be Crystal Palace rather than St Mary's, Saints already have a lot of attacking options and can wait for the right striker at the right price rather than buy the first one that comes along.

Berahino is an undoubted talent, but there are question marks about his attitude that will worry Saints and they may feel that the £20 million that the Croydon Advertiser is claiming that Palace are willing to pay to take him to the club will be seen as too much money for a player with his track record both on and off the pitch in terms of attitude and actual performance stats.

But West Brom are in no hurry to sell till they get the right price, they would probably achieve a development fee similar to the one Burnley received for Danny Ings last summer, back then Liverpool had to stump up £6.5 million plus £1.5 million in add ons.

That being the case then West Brom would rather keep Berahino another season than accept a bid of £12 million as Saints had to do so with Wanyama.

The other issue is that several clubs are after Berahino so a bidding war is likely, with Wanyama there was only one offer on the table and that was Spurs, Saints had already made the plans for replacing the Kenyan so they knew it would be counter productive to try and hang on for an extra million or two.

So it looks like Berahino will not be heading to St Mary's at east not for the money that West Brom want, he will perhaps become an Eagle, the only way he might end up at St Mary's is if a deal is not done by early August, then if the price has dropped Saints might consider doing business if they still have not got in who they want.

From what we have seen so far this close-season Palace have demonstrated much more ambition than Saints and could well be a surprise package this season. On the other hand if we had wanted Berahino it is likely we would have snapped him up by now so that he could have joined our summer camp stateside. I suggest, forget him too many question marks over his attitude and performance. We have Redmond why buy another OK-ish winger?

I would have been surprised if Sadio Berahino was signed, surely that would be asking for trouble. Best of luck to Palace but the chances are he will have a decent season then been agitating for a move. I might be wrong but it seems like a big Osvaldo sized gamble.

SaintsBrock: I am quite frankly flabbergasted by your reasoning. Berahino is a proven EPL goalscorer. You're right to a certain extent about his attitude and he's had a rough couple of years as a result of it. But he's a young lad and he will learn from it. Plus he has a lot to prove to break into the England camp and Southampton is the perfect platform to do so.

His drop in reputation is mainly to do with his agent Aidy Ward--who he sacked last summer. Adding him to Southampton will only add to our English core! Maybe we'll actually have someone who knows what it means to play for a Saints shirt.

Another thing who else is out there in the UK that would provide a better option? I don't understand the logic behind this one. Are we going to sign another unknown striker from a lesser league.

This is a no-brainer in my opinion and it would be a mighty shame if we lost out to Palace.

We need to stop being so stingy and pay the money! Our transfer policy is becoming more and more like Arsenal.

My thoughts exactly as SaintBrock when I heard. Pardew has made some shrewd buys but Berahino would be a gamble. His record on the field is good his antics off it not so good, he needs a strong manager. Paedew knows the uk market and players. Puel has to rely on the Black Box which is good and Les which maybe is not so good.

Would we really want another striker of this type??? We got rid of our trouble makers why do we need some one else's.

Wouldn't have thought Berahino fits our profile at all, so amazed we are even being linked.

Ps........money and ambition are not the same thing!

My head is mixed up over this one, He seems to be quality but who knows? I know as little about his quality as I do about his much publicised 'antics'. Given that scenario I'm surprised we're linked so strongly? Time will tell .

do not need him we got enough players we will do well with what we have. I like the recent post about the players want away to win trophies with the big clubs the ones to stay i.e Fonte wins the biggest :))

It's fun to have a poke at Les Reed and he's got one of those unfortunate mugs but still a man's got to be judged on his decisions and the results of those decisions. Maybe he'll slip up one day or maybe not but as things stand he's earned the right to be trusted. Show me another club with seven straight seasons of solid improvement. I can get this thing about the academy being under used by RK, so probably the pendulum will swing the other way now, till that doesn't fit expectations and it swings back. It's always been good at Saints but we should be enjoying these here good times, not moaning about them. Based on the last six games we're the form team in the premier league ffs !

Frankly I am ambivalent as to whether or not we sign Berahino.

What concerns me is that Pelle and Mane have gone and there appears to be an idea beginning to be accepted that Austin and Jay Rod will fill the gap. This strikes me as an extremely risky strategy given that neither managed to complete a game for us last season.

I wish them both well and hope I am proved wrong. If not then it is going to be one hell of a burden for Shane Long to carry given that Redmond could not even get regular games with a very poor Norwich team that were subsequently relegated.
