Tadic To Wear Protective Mask Against Liverpool
Monday, 14th Nov 2016 08:06

Dusan Tadic is set to follow the example of former Saints Claus Lundekvam and Bruce Grobbelaar and wear a protective face mask.

Dusan Tadic is set to wer a protective face mask after suffering a suspected broken nose in Serbia's game against Wales on Saturday.

The injury happened in the first half, but after 5 minutes of treatment and a change of shirt, Tadic played on.

Despite the injury which saw plenty of blood after a high kick caught him square in the face, Tadic played the full game and was quoted as saying " I played on because Serbia people are not soft"

He said in full after the game

"I think I have broken my nose, at first I thought I could not see so many things but I couldn't leave my teammates alone on the pitch and I wanted to play. Every player feels really important for the team."

"I couldn't breathe or do anything. But that does not matter as when you play a game you want to fight for your country to try to give your best. I lost a lot of blood. I saw Taylor after the game and he asked me how it was. I said it is OK. Serbia people is not so soft."

Tadic now is set to wear a mask to protect his nose should he play in either Serbia's friendly on Tuesday against Ukraine followed by playing for Saints against Liverpool.

He would not be the first player to wear a mask whilst in action for Saints, goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar started the trend back in the mid 90's and then in 2000 /01 season Claus Lundekvam suffered a similar injury and soldiered on wearing a mask.

Back then it was not a common sight in football although these days players seem more and more to wear protective masks rather than not play on.

Tadic now seems set to show his commitment to Saints cause at a time when we have a number of injuries and become the man in the mask for Saints and hopefuly steal three points against Liverpool.

It was a disgraceful challenge Taylor could clearly see he was there before swinging his boot, from what I can gather unpunished by the referee. Taylor's only concern seemed to be that he was not punished. Bet it would have been a different media reaction if it had been one of their MUFC or Spurs sweethearts.

To hide his embarrassment at missing so many chances?

Seriously, well played that man! It is the sort of spirit we need in this club that all too often is missing when needed most.

I should add that in fairness Dusan should not be asked to play at the weekend, it is too soon and too risky and it is time that Boufal stepped up to the plate anyway. Give Dusan a break, no pun intended.

I remember when Lundekvam had his cheekbone broken, the mask seemed to coincide with some of his best performances. A good omen, hopefully.

It'll be great later in the season when they ask some kid in the crowd "who scored that goal?" They won't need to blot out his face.
