Liverpool Want To Swap Central Defenders
Monday, 16th Jan 2017 10:37

According to the latest reports on Merseyside, Jurgen Klopp is keen to do business with Saints this month and do a swap for central defenders.

Breathe easy, Klopp's target is not Virgil Van Dijk who despite the press rumours Saints have rebuffed all suitors and made it quite clear that they will not sell in this transfer window.

Jose Fonte is the man that Liverpool want and are willing to do a deal involving Mamadou Sakho.

The stumbling block at the moment is that the two clubs have the little matter of a League Cup semi final second leg to deal with, understandably Liverpool would not want to sell Sakho to Saints and then see him play a starring role in keeping them at bay in the game at at Anfield and with Fonte having already appeared for Saints in the competition they would not be able to play him against us.

When the tie is resolved then the deal could well move forward, bizarrely Fonte would be valued at £10 million in the deal with Sakho around double that figure, very strange for a club chasing the title to be doing that sort of business.

But this would be a very good deal for Saints who could get Fonte off their books and get his replacement in for a net outlay of only £10 million ish.

From both clubs point of view they could do with the deal being struck now, but the trouble is that unlike loan deals where a player cannot play against his parent club, you cannot enforce a clause that forbids a player turning out against his former employers be it a few days after a transfer or a longer period.

So if Sakho was to move now then Liverpool would be completely at the risk of their former player turning out against them next week, although given that he has not had one minute of first team action this season, indeed he is not named in the squad, then Sakho is likely to be short of match sharpness and would Saints risk him.

I'm sure Fonte would be interested in moving to Liverpool and I'm sure we'd be happy to pick up a defender of Sakho's quality. I'm not convinced that Liverpool want Fonte and I'm sure we will struggle to meet Sakho's wage demands. I don't think this is even agents trying to drum up interest in players, I think it's just lazy journalism on the Mirror's part. Interesting one to contemplate though!

Rumour I read was Sakho wants £105k a week, which suggests he would rather do nothing and wait until the end of his contract rather than take a pay cut and actually play football again! If true, is that the kind of attitude Saints should be employing?

this is a deal that makes a lot of sense (unless its true about Sakhos wages)

Obviously no good football related news about so why not make up a story, the day Sakho joins the Saints will be the day I paint my a*se blue and you can start calling me Mildred.

This Klopp trying to keep Fonte away from ManU and unload his problem child at the same time.

Plus this would further weaken Saints. So expect Les to do the deal.

We talked about this on here last week, it as as Sanguine says probably just lazy journalism. If Fonte does go it doesn't really matter to us where he ends up but Scouse fans must be wondering if they can't find better sources for new players than Saints. At this rate they'll be fielding our Paint Pot winning team in the EFL Cup Final.

I simply don't think Sakho is worth the money. I do feel we need to plan ahead for VVD going in the summer so why not sign his replacement NOW. He could then play alongside VVD and take over as the main man in the summer. Sakho is not, in my opinion, good enough to be the other first choice CB. Fonte can f.o. to whoever will have him as long as we get over 10m.

My worry is saints inactivity in the transfer market so far we are crying out for a striker since day one but club gambled on Redmond Austin long and j rod which bit them in n the arse, most of us on here saw it they didn't. Everton are now passing by us with two good signings in spider and shootman we at saints can just dream that maybe one day les will wake up and smell the coffee

What an absolute load of b ollocks, if he's not good enough for Liverpool then he's not good enough for us. Liverpool would only want to get better players than they already have and it seems they are the catalyst for all of this, so were on the bad end of this deal. not good
