Saints Going Head To Head With Celtic For Belgian League Sensation
Tuesday, 18th Apr 2017 09:26

Saints are being reported in Scotland as about to challenge Celtic to land the latest scoring sensation in the Belgium League.

Celtic are being reported in the Scottish press as having posted a £7 million pound bid for 19 year old Eupen forward Henry Onyekuru after the Nigerian admitted he will leave the Belgium club in the summer.

He almost joined Celtic in the January transfer window, but back then his club refused to sell.

Now they have caved in to his demands and the player himself has expressed a desire to play in the Premier League although he confirmed that Celtic have also been courting him.

But although he has stated his intention to leave he is remaining coy on the destination saying.

“After the play-offs (Europa League qualification), I will announce my decision.

“I have made my decision to leave. I have already agreed with Eupen that I am joining my new club after this season.

“I want to take the next step and play abroad. My ultimate aim is to one day play in the Premier League.

“There have been many enquiries for me. From clubs in Scotland, England and Germany.

“I am negotiations right now with clubs.

“I believe I have had my best season, but I want to leave Eupen on a high and I would love to get as far up the table as possible before I leave.

“But it’s really been my first season in a major league and I know I still have a lot to learn.”

He has scored 18 times for Eupen in all competitions this season and the Daily Record in Scotland have announced Celtic's interest, but they have also claimed that Saints are one of the clubs who are in talks with Onyekuru.

Chelsea have also been linked but as Onyekuru seems to have his head switched on to how his career should progress that might make a move to Stamford Bridge unlikely, he would be aware of the difficulty he would have to get into the Chelsea squad let alone the team.

That being the case it could be Saints and Celtic head to head, whilst a move to Scotland would almost certainly offer him a first team place and a Champions League spot even if only fleetingly, St Mary's might also being a draw as it would offer Premier league football with a team known for giving young players a chance and developing them.

As he confirmed he still has a lot to learn, Southampton might just be the place.

I expect that it's lost in translation, but this passage suggests that he's agreed terms with a club and it's not Saints:

"I have made my decision to leave. I have already agreed with Eupen that I am joining my new club after this season. I want to take the next step and play abroad. My ultimate aim is to one day play in the Premier League."

I think he'd get more game time at Celtic, I can't see him starting ahead of Charlie Austin and Gabbiadini. Still, seems like an exciting prospect to be linked with!
