Saints Playing For £9.5 Million In Prize Money This Week
Monday, 15th May 2017 12:49

Those that say that the season has nothing left to play for going into the final week, could not be any farther from the truth with £9.5 million the difference between Saints worst possible ending and best.

Ironically this is almost the same total that Saints are rumoured to have offered Besiktas for striker Cenk Tosun, so in essence Saints are playing for prize money that will effectively buy them a player.

There is £1.9 million per place up for grabs on Premier league placings and it is important to Saints that they grab as much of it as possible.

As it stands they could finish as high as 8th or as low as 13th, although that would mean Watford winning both their last two games against Chelsea and Manchester City to make that happen.

Indeed 12th place could well be sorted before the weekend depending on the results at St Mary's and also when Leicester host Tottenham on Thursday.

Saints fate is in their own hands though win both home games and they will finish a guaranteed 9th and more than likely 8th matching 2013/14's placing under Mauricio Pochetino.

So there is still a lot of money up for grabs and each place is vital, each place is worth roughly the same amount as around 3,000 adult season ticket holders income, quite pertinent given the number who are claiming they will not renew on social media.

If Saints supporters want Southampton Football Club to keep moving forward then they have to show they back the club through thick and thin, this time last year many were clamouring that the ground should be expanded due to how many supporters we could get in.

Ironically many of those who demanded expansion are now saying that they are not renewing, perhaps proving the point why expanding St Mary's is not applicable just yet, we need to have a full ground week in week out and season in season out to show there is the demand, if we lose 3,000 supporters everytime there is a blip then we will only waste money expanding the stadium, money that could be used on other areas not least the deficit from the empty seats.

I still don't understand the concept of not renewing a season ticket because of the way the club does its business. For me you either support your club or you don't. You don't pick and choose. Some of my fondest memories as supporter were from travelling to places like Carlisle to watch us getting beaten. Not great at the time, but appreciated for the fact that all that pain was part of a plan which saw this club get turned around, and made me appreciate what we have at Southampton compared to the likes of Carlisle, Dagenham and Redbridge and our 'friends' down the road.

Cant see us winning either of the two games we have left. To win a game you need to score a goal and we don't do that at home lately. 0-0 looks like the best result we can hope for.
Still with Clown Puel hope remains eternal. Hopefully Boufal, Prowse and Stephens wont play..

For many the whole concept of support isnt cheering players on, but abusing them verbally at each home game, I dont know you pete so not accusing you, but perhaps if a few more cheered Ward Prowse on he might play better, screaming abuse at him certainly doesnt

Agree that it's useless to abuse our players from the sidelines. The rare times I've done that is when players have clearly not been trying. Any problems with JWP are not a result of lack of effort on his part.

However, it's actually far worse to repeatedly call players out on a site like this, where the comments have some degree of permanence. Yoshida is unlikely to hear abuse from the stands but he might read this blog occasionally...

Spot on Peps. On the rare occasions I've witnessed players or managers clearly not trying or showing a flagrant disrespect for the club I've made my opinions known. This however is rare, especially in recent times. Those on the fringe of the first XI need our support more than anyone. Sport is a confidence game. We're lucky the likes of Mane, Pelle and Wanyama have been strong enough to ignore some of the idiots in the stands and believe in themselves. It's embarrassing to hear the abuse sometimes. It's even more cringeworthy when the same idiots are crying into their beer glasses a season later about those same players have left the club.. It's got to be an easier decision to make as a player when you remind yourself that it works both ways!

Never understood criticism of any player during a game. I have a total numpty behind me in the Kingsland who spent all last year hammering Pelle and now its Tadic and Bertrand who get dogs abuse every game. Pointless and stupid.

This article Nick is a bit of a dog's breakfast. You start by emphasising the need to finish 8th for financial reasons and end up getting distracted and talking about fans loyalty or lack of so inevitably you'll get a mix of responses.

On the main point we must all agree it is important for the club to finish as high in the league as is possible just for cash flow reasons and the coming window.
