Time To End 14 Years Of Home Woes Against United !
Monday, 18th Sep 2017 10:12

You might not be able to remember the last time Saints beat Manchester United at home, that is because it was 14 years ago and now it's time to put that right.

Over the years at the Dell beating Manchester United was something the Saints supporters looked forward to doing on a fairly regular basis, indeed in our final six seasons at the old ground we won four of them including that infamous 3-1 win when United changed their shirts at half time and the game six months later when we won 6-3, a drubbing that most assume was the shirt changing fixture.

But since moving to St Mary's in 2001 wins over Manchester have been rarer than rocking horse manure, in fact since the move we have beaten the spawn of the devil only once on home turf, that win came 0n 31st August 2003 when an 88th minute James Beattie goal gave us a 1-0 win.

At St Mary's we have met them 9 times in the Premier League with only that single win plus 2 draws and 6 defeats, add to that 3 FA Cup games all ending in defeat and the overall record is 12 games played, 1 win, 2 draws and 9 defeats.

Ironically our record against them at Old Trafford in the same period is better than our home one, we have won twice and drawn a game, all in the last four seasons, meaning that since 2001 we have gained 7 points away but only 5 at St Mary's.

So it is about time that we beat United again on our own patch and what better time to do it than Saturday and in doing so dispel the doubters in our own crowd whilst moving up the table.

Other than the first few minutes I thought Manure looked beatable yesterday. Ronnie boy never had that trouble at Old Trafford as the Saints manager!

We ought to be set up to stop Manure scoring but can we score ourselves? Another 1-0 from a corner in the 88th min with Hoedt instead of Beattie will do me.

We will need a lot of dicipline in midfield and defence to get our way but we can do it if everyone is on their game. Important not to concede defeat mentally before the game even starts with Man Utd. Literally half the football supporters in the world are behind them.

Maybe the day that Redmond can step up to the plate then Nick? If he belts a goal into the top corner to win the match then, like Pelle and Mane before him, the moaners can move onto their next victim. I recall that Clasie's goal at WBA last season lifted his status, the problem being of course that he hardly kicked a ball for us again!
Personally, I think Long and Gabbi are our best chances of getting goals against Utd so I'm afraid Redmond, for me, would need to sit this one out.

I think I may have been in the minority when I say I don't think Romeu had a great game at the weekend. He made one hospital back pass on the edge of the box and one bad slip on the halfway line which both led to good Palace chances and could easily have led to us dropping two points. He also missed a good chance to score, when he was unmarked for header. If he is back to his normal quality self against Man U and Lemina plays like he did at the weekend I'd feel very comfortable about having the lion's share of possession in midfield. Add to that Hoedt and VVD (or Yoshi) in defence and a keeper, who hopefully is feeling a little lifted after his recent clean sheet and I'm feeling a bit more confident than normal. The question is who will complete the spine of the team upfront? It'd be hard leaving Long out after the weekend and we need someone who won't sit back in awe and let them play out from the back. So do we go bold at home and play Gabbi alongside him? With Bertrand and Cedric also virtually picking themselves that just leaves the question who would play on the left and right of midfield. Whoever it is they need to start making a bit of a stamp in those positions because someone needs to step up.

bstokesaint: I agree with you. Saturday wasn't Romeu's best game. I think Lemina's performance really overshadowed how poorly he played. For me, I would go with Shane Long up-front and have Boufal in middle. Redmond should start on the wing and prove his worth to the team. If he flops we should bring on Davis or Sims. Man Utd should be the last chance he gets before we consider putting others in the starting line-up ahead of him.

Ever since the 1963 FA Cup Semi final v. MU, (which I watched)... we've seen Saints getting done over by sometime fairly mediocre United sides, and luck just doesn't come into it. There can hardly be a Saints fan who doesn't want " some sort of revenge " for the EFL Final result in the Spring. I don't care what sort of match it turns out to be, but beating United in a fair game -and getting credit for doing so - just doesn't seem to be on the cards. A good win is long overdue, but with MU's start this season, it'll take a big slice of luck for us to get three points this weekend. COYR !

You can't mention the 6-3 without mentioning 'that' goal! I still don't know why bbc and Sky show Matt's wonder goal against Blackburn as the best goal of his or of that era. His (tight) dribble past three utd players (including Keane if I remember) and deft chip from the edge of the box over arguably the world's best keeper at that time was him at his best. Oh and with the 3-1, he again mugged Schmeichel with amazingly quick feet pulling the ball away from his hand and chipping it over him. Two great games that you correctly point out that the press always mix up!

We will need to score at least one goal on Saturday to even be in with a shout of a point. Never in a million years are we going to score two so 2-1 to United is most likely to be the outcome.
