On This Day In History - 13th April
Monday, 13th Apr 2020 17:24

We take a look at some of the other games played on this day over the years and there have been some belters.

Manchester United were the visitors in 1967/68 a time when they were at their pre Premier League peak, they would finish 2nd in the League in this season but would win the European Cup.

We although not getting dragged right into the relegation battle, were just a little too close for comfort so every point counted, a full house at the Dell saw us 2-0 up just after the half an hour mark Terry Paine & Ron Davies getting the goals, a scoreline exactly the same as the same day 28 years later would see, but this time it would be the visitors who would score just before the break, Bobby Charlton & George Best got the goals in the four minute period before half time and the game ended 2-2.

1973/74 saw the 2nd part of a 3 game Easter programme that would ultimately send us down, 21,456 at White Hart Lane saw Spurs win 3-1, Ian Turner made his debut in the Saints goal and kept a clean sheet for only a single minute with ex Saint Martin Chivers scoring, an OG brought Saints back into the game, but the home side scored twice to make it zero points so far from the two Easter Games.

In our first season back in the top flight West Brom were the visitors in 1979, Malcolm Waldron opened the scoring just after half time but we conceded an equaliser in the final minute Cyrille Regis doing the damage.

In 1982 we were still harbouring hopes of a top 5 finish when we travelled to Swansea City, this was a six pointer for a European place, Keith Cassells was making his debut, future Saint Alan Curtis scored on 27th minute for the only goal.

Sunderland were the visitors in 1991 and were despatched 3-1 to hurry them on the way towards relegation Rod Wallace equalising on the stroke of half time before Matt Le Tissier scored from the spot on 81 mins and then two mi.

nutes later Alan Shearer made sure.

A trip to South London in 2002 to take on Charlton saw a goal in each half, the home side in the first and then an 85th minute El Khalej header saw Saints stay firmly in mid table.

As we know back in 2009 we were in our darkest hour , Crystal Palalce arrived at St Mary's on Easter Monday and a David McGoldrick goal on 67 minutes, 23,220 being in attendance to put money in the coffers to keep the club afloat.

In 2010 we travelled to Bristol Rovers on a Tuesday evening, a decent following made it's way West with Rovers being directly above us in the table, we were 8 points from the top six with a game in hand and we won that in great style on this night,

Ironically the home side took the lead with a 24th minute penalty and they looked to be going in at the break 1-0 when their ex hero and now ours Rickie Lambert scored twice in the two minutes before the break.

In the second half a Morgan Schneiderlin long range effort followed by another two goals in two minutes this time from Adam Lallana and Jason Puncheon gave us a 5-1 win.

Two years later and Saints and Reading were locked on 82 points at the top of the Championship with West Ham coming up fast on the rails when the Royals arrived for a Friday night game at St Mary's with only 4 games left.

Reading led at the break Rickie Lambert equalised shortly after but two goals in the last 18 minutes meant the impetus was now with Reading at the top with the bulk of the 31,892 crowd going home unhappy.

Later that weekend West Ham would win their game in hand to bring them within 3 points, it was going to be a tight finish.

A year later and West Ham had joined Saints in the Premier League via the play offs and the sides played out a 1-1 draw at St Mary's, Gaston Ramirez giving us the lead and Andy Carroll equalising.
