A Rough Guide To Coventry City
Monday, 11th Dec 2023 21:19

It has been 12 years since our last visit to what was then called the Ricoh Arena, but a lot of water has gone under the bridge and finally after a few years away playing at various other grounds they are back playing in Coventry.

The Stadium.

I actually like the ground now called the Coventry Building Society Arena, I think it is one off the better stadiums built over the past 20 years or so, although its rarely been filled for football matches since Coventry first moved there from Highfield Road in 2005, it has a good atmosphere due to its steep banks of seats on three sides.

However it is an out of town stadium and not easy to get to other than by road.

Coventry fans are returning in numbers and the average this season is around the 23k mark, however you would not think that when you see games on the tv with so many empty seats prevalent.

The Away Section

Saints fans will be seated in the South Stand, were normally 3,000 can be accommodated, and despite this being a mid week game we have sold just about every ticket they are willing to give us

Due to the steepness of the terracing it offers a great view, whilst underneath the concourses are big with all the facilities you might expect.

Getting There

By Car

The simplest route is to take the A34 to Oxford and then the M40 Northbound, at junction 15 take the A46 signposted Coventry, follow the signs to the M6 on the Coventry ring road and join the M6 northbound for one junction, leaving at Junction 3 taking the A444 towards Coventry, the ground is then on your left after approx 1 mile.

Alternatively as the crow flies you could go through Coventry itself and follow the signs, quick going to the game, not so quick after. Most away fans report that getting on to the M6 after the game is fairly quick as it is heading out of the City so not as busy as going in the other direction.

Parking

There are numerous car parks around the ground and both public and private, the cost in the official car parks is steep at £15 , although some streets next to the ground are permit only, street parking bans are strictly enforced within a 1 mile radius.

The nearby retail park has a two hour time limit strictly adhered too.

By Train

Coventry's main train station is about 3 1/2 to 4 miles away so a long walk, however there is a shuttle bus from the station ,however since we last visited there is a train station aptly named ‘Coventry Arena’ located towards the south east corner of the ground; this is serviced by West Midlands railway with London’s Euston station under an hours ride away, otherwise its a taxi, however I would imagine few are travelling by train.

Eating/ Drinking Etc.

There is little around the stadium itself, however behind the retail park is Longford Road, this has a number of pubs, you can cross the canal to get there and check out either Nashaa (an Indian restaurant) or China Garden. Both are near one another on Longford Road with a pub, the Coach & Horses, next door to the Chinese. All of these establishments can be reached in just over 10 minutes. there is also Dhillons Brewery located much closer to the stadium and the Bill & Anchor pub which has a car park that is free.
