Southampton Football Club’s Women’s side, is not something that we have covered much on this website, so it is good to have Arron Sanders give his perspective on some changes in the Women's pyramid, that could benefit Saints.

Saints women's side have been provided with extra incentive to turn last season’s disappointing campaign around with the news that the WSL is to be expanded to 14 sides meaning promotion from their current tier expands from one side to as many as three.

As their male counterparts will do for the coming season. , Saints women currently reside in the second tier of their football pyramid, where up until now the chance of promotion to the top flight was restricted to one solitary spot for the division’s champions.

However under pressure from a variety of accounts, the women’s FA have confirmed a restructuring of the two top tiers of the league pyramid in an effort to provide greater opportunities and help grow the women’s game by changing the current one up one down system to two sides automatically promoted followed by a play off match between the bottom side in the WSL and the side finishing third in the newly named WSL2 division for the 2025-2026 campaign.

This opportunity will only come around once in a blue moon for the Saints, to be able achieve their ambitions of playing top flight football and the club will need to back Marianne Spacey-Cale and her team giving them the best possible squad to achieve their promotion aims.

With the enhanced chances of success, it will be well worth supporters keeping a close eye on our women’s team campaign during their 25-26 campaign let’s hope we can celebrate a double Saints promotion come May.
