Norwich City 2 v 1 Southampton
EFL Championship
Saturday, 13th December 2025 Kick-off 12:30
Southampton At Norwich City The Preview

Saints have already won comprehensively at Carrow Road this season in the Carabao Cup and now they need to go and repeat that performance in the Championship to keep up the promotion push, don't forget it's a 12.30 kick off.

Tonda Eckert made it 6 wins out of 7 on Tuesday night against West Brom, but there were concerns about the manner in which it was achieved as Saints endured a second half battering where they were very much on the back foot and disarray and nearly threw away a 3-0 half time lead.

Now we will find out how the German manager will react and if he has learned any lessons and adapted to ensure that it doesn't happen again.

In the last 3 games Saints have scored 8 goals, to make themselves the top scorers in the league, but in this period they have also let in 5 goals and that is not a good goals conceded to games ratio.

Again I would not expect many changes to the starting line up from the win over the Baggies, perhaps the only one will be the restoration of Jack Stephens to the back line.

Our starting line up has not been a problem, what has been the issue is the substitutions, however I would also point out that this is perhaps only been in the last game and perhaps at Millwall.

One good feature of Tonda Eckert's managerial reign has been game management, I have often said that once he gets a game won, he prefers to make sure it stays won, rather than keep the free flowing game going and seeking to score more goals.

At Millwall we threw away a one goal lead and then having pulled back to 2-2, conceded a soft goal at the end, so tight is it at the top, if we had hung on for the draw in that game we would now be in the play off positions and just 3 points off second.

Against Birmingham we did the same,, but kept it tight and saw out the game, but against West Brom 3-0 up with 62 minutes gone and in control, we had two subs ready to come on and then bang the Baggies scored, if Tonda Eckert has made an error in this 7 game run and lets be fair he hasn't made many, then this was one of them.

At this point he should have held fire with the changes for 5 minutes and just kept our composure, but he took off both Tom Fellows & Leo Scienza and our balance was interrupted and West Brom took full advantage and took advantage of the situation and changed the flow of the game.

It worsened when under the cosh and under fire we took off the only attacking player who could hold the ball up and relieve the pressure, Jay Robinson is a promising talent, but this was not the moment to bring him on.

So hopefully Tonda will have learnt a lesson and learnt it well going forward.

But apart from this, identifying what did go wrong on Tuesday and it should be remembered that we did win the game, it is hard to pick fault with our manager's handling of the team since taking charge.

But we still go to Carrow Road with confidence, the Canaries are not singing at the moment, they sit second from bottom with just 3 wins and 5 draws to their name and 12 defeats which has seen them score 22 goals, but concede 33, only Hull & bottom club Sheffield Wednesday have let in more.

After a reasonable start to the season, 2 wins out of their first 4 games, albeit the two wins were against Pompey & Blackburn, they have collapsed spectacularly, since that win at the tail end of August, they have won just once in 16 games, with 5 draws and 10 defeats.

Of those draws, they have all been against sides around them at the bottom, Oxford United and both Sheffield clubs, most of their points have been against clubs in the bottom half of the division, however it should be noted that their solitary win in the last 3 1/2 months was against Queens Park Rangers who themselves like Saints have risen up the table in recent weeks.

So on paper there should be only one result for this game and we have to make sure that is the case when we stop playing the game on paper and start on grass, we have to blow them away in the first half and then make sure that we don't give them a sniff of the game at any time in the 90 minutes let alone around the middle of the second half when we have proved most vulnerable of late.

All the plaudits since Tonda Eckert took over have been about the attacking players, Scienza, Fellows, Armstrong & Azaz and how they have flourished under Eckert, but spare a thought for Gavin Bazunu.

The Irish International, is still only 23, a young age for a first team keeper, in the first part of the season he was not great but he was Ok, in truth he did not deserve to be dropped, his axing was due to behind the scenes issues on the training ground, not his performances.

Since his return he has been improving in every game, he has not been perfect, but he has not been responsible for as many goals as some would have you believe, in the last 3 games he made several vital saves that have made sure that we did win two of them and not lose all three.

He is benefitting from having a defence in front of him that is not changing drastically week in week out and itself is a work in progress, both the players in the defence and Bazunu are improving under Tonda Eckert and will continue to do so.

But at Norwich we need to avoid the complacency that set in against West Brom, we went from a team that was confident in it's own abilities to see out games, into one that thought it was their right to do so and we got caught out.

Norwich are not West Brom, Millwall or Birmingham, all promotion chasing sides, but they are fighting for their lives, a win would see them get back within sight of safety, defeat could leave them, if other results go against them, be 8 points off 4th from bottom.

This will not be an easy game, but it is one that we are well capable of winning and given our form should win well.

Can we make it 7 wind out of 8, if we do then we will find ourselves in the play off positions, whether we are still there after the rest of the division has played their fixtures is another matter, but we will have made a statement that we are now true contenders for promotion.

I think this will be a difficult game to win.
Norwich are in a false position, they have the player’s to be easy mid table.
As we know ourselves a win can change a lot for future games.
Still going for a win though 😬0:2 or 1:2 COYS..

A banana skin for Saints?

Whilst the substitutions almost lost points in recent matches the alternative perspective is that the energy levels of quick players gets depleted. With three games in a week I don't have an issue with Fellows, Armstrong, Scienza and Azaz not playing the entire match, their shift was done, or should have been.
Momentum gets lost when substitutions are made but at present, and certainly in the past, the team doesn't adapt quickly enough. Leadership and organisation have a big part to play and, as you have said many times Nick, we don't have a defender with those vital qualities.
Whether it's Bazunu, Stephens or THB someone has to shout at players whilst they pick up the new formation. All those folders of screenshots, shown to substitutes on the touchline, have no benefit if players don't switch on immediately.

Norwich have been playing much better since the change of manager and have been unlucky not to get more points.
Saints must not under estimate the Canaries who are always difficult to play against at Carrow Road.

I believe Norwich will be without Josh Sargent for this match through injury which is a bonus for Saints as he is key to their attack.

That said I hear Tom Fellows is 50:50 for us but expect Weeman would come in if he is not fit.

On the Bazunu point I largely agree but we look nervy as a team at corners and free kicks and that is due to Bazunu not dominating his box and claiming high balls. Get that right then the second ball scramble doesnt happen. He has improved his shot stopping though which was an issue previously.

There is a worrying aspect to our recent performances - starting like racehorses and finishing like carthorses. Against WBA we lapsed again into a training ground routine and that was before halftime. Taking the foot off the gas doesn't cut it in this league, at least not early in the game. I agree that Bazunu earned us the points but, when we are on all-out attack would someone tell him to stay in his own half and not venture over the midway line. He will eventually get caught out by a long speculative shot. We should get a point or three at Carrow Road.

Subs are a tricky one. Ralph used to keep the same team on even when we were well ahead and we ended up with lots of injuries. Admittedly it was a much smaller squad. I would imagine that with the performance data available today there is a bit more going into substitutions than just instinct.

(reading above) ..I think we are all of the same mind. On paper this is the easiest game this month, but those teams in the drop zone fight like h*ll to survive and despite our recent whirlwind starts, we still have to hold onto a result for 90+ minutes. The sort of fixture that (historically) has become a banana skin for Saints when we should bring home a win.

If Tonda has a Plan B for the second half of games, it doesn't seem to be a foolproof one, or maybe their is another plan ...and the players forget about it after the break?.

No surprise if we are without Fellows or Scienza, (they take a lot of punishment from defenders - which is not reflected in the yellow card count but even so we recall that Fraser has a good turn of pace, and can also score goals, and it was a pleasant surprise to see that Archer had some fast feet when playing wide, as he beat defenders a couple of times on Tuesday. If the midfield clicks then we can hope for some early goals and a better effort at game managements after the break. With Azaz and Armstrong in form we must hope they continue their goalscoring efforts. A good win could put us in the Top Six.

Bazunu is no suddenly going to start to command his 6yard box it’s not in his make up,and as none of are central defenders are commanding in our own box it’s imperative we get an exceptional keeper in the Jan window.

We paid a lot of money for a decent keeper Farlow, unfortunately he decided that he'd prefer to sit on the bench at Newcastle this season. Yes, he wanted to play at the top level, to keep his England hopes alive, but he's now in the wilderness. I doubt if he's on Tuchel's list for a travel visa.

His name is Leo,
and he dances with the ball
And when our Leo plays,
We're gonna win them all
