Check out the Boardman 29'er Pro on Halfords site that's a grand, the Cannondale 29'er Flash Alloy 3 2012 model is 870quid [1400 when it came out] online at Pauls Cycles.

Slightly better kit on the boardman
100mm travel vs 80mm also better option although a 29er doesn't need as much travel as the front wheel absorbs more
Tyre choice interesting with boardman nobby nics aimed at off road compared to rapid robs on the cannondale which are low value faster rolling tyres, not that important but gives a hint

The boardman looks nicer IMO and is obviously newer

Yep, they're quality bikes for the money, the components are great, but its stuff like the head stock that you got to be carefull of, the fire roads I use take their toll, my old Specialised as taken a right hammering, got a few leaks on fork seals, but that was a cheap bike though, just a stock specialised hardrock with V brakes, heavy bloody thing too, my mate is getting the Boardman through the Cycle to work scheme, jammy git

I thought anyone can get tax relief through the cycle to work scheme maybe I'm wrong, but its a great idea and I'd like to see more bikes on the streets/roads. Any Swans fan who went to Malmo would have seen bikes everywhere problem with this country compared to a city like Malmo is you couldn't leave your bike unattended in this country because some tw@t would nick it.

Cheers, think I'll pop down Halfords Saturday and have a ride on the Boardman.

Not fussed on Road riding to be honest, Im spoilt for choice up here in the Cimla the forest and its fire roads are close by, the Foel is a hell of a climb to the top, but great fun coming back down bit hairy, but thats the fun just keep off the front brake, its like being back in my off roader days on the old Husky.

Yep I agree with Orion. The Boarman looks like a lovely piece of kit. Boardman has a great set of forks. XT kit on the boarman is also slightly higher spec than SLX (although little noticeable difference in performance and some swear by the SLX because it's thought to be harder wearing).

I'd be tempted by the Boardman. But, the biggest difference between the 2 will be how they feel to you. It's a good idea to pop down to Halfords and take one out for a spin on the local roads. If you're spending £1,000 they should let you take it out. If the Boardman feels comfy, it's a no-brainer. Great spec for the money and well-regarded brand (it's just halfords sales and distribution that lets them down, but that's a non-issue because if you are not happy with the service you get you can just find a local bike shop to carry out any subsequent repairs /servicing).

Great looking bike - go for it!

try www.urbancyclery.co.uk they used to be in town but have moved to an industrial unit in Kingsbridge( opp garden village club) loads of bikes must be 100+ in stock and all the other kit, good feedback and I think they have a bike fitting service as well

Well I bought this one in the end great bike, http://www.boardmanbikes.com/mtb/29er_pro.html
but pedals are sh:t my left foot keeps slipping off the pedal when I put the power on, been riding wearing trainers, but tried astroturf trainers today and my foot still slipped off, just ordered a pair of Five Tens Mtb shoes and gonna pop back to Halfords tomoz and query the quality of the pedals fitted to the bike.

Tredz are always expensive. But you do get the benefit of a Swansea store.

Crafty bastards they are, on their website they were advertising the hellitape kits [bike shield] for 22 quid, but in the shop they are priced up as 26quid, told them and had it for the web page price, but anyone just popping in to buy a kit, who hadn't looked at web page would have had to pay 26 quid I expect.

Looks great and you've made a good choice. You get stacks load of decent kit with those.

Re the pedals, the best solution by far is to go down the clip-in route. For MTBs shimano spd is the most common. Well worth looking at depending on the type of riding you do. If you need to put your foot down every 2 mins then don't bother. But if you spent 5, 15, 30 mins in the saddle turning the pedals then you'll be amazed at the difference clip in pedals make. Even if you do spend the first couple of months toppling over at traffic lights :-)

Not gonna go down the clip up route to be honest, I have tried them once, but they're not for me, got my seat set high, so its a lean to the side to get off and if Im clipped up I'll end up in heap on the ground and where I ride it'll get painful

Spd's are the best choice, twisting foot to unclip will soon become second nature. After a few rides you will never use a stanard pedal again. Must admit I did have a few tumbles with feet clipped in during early days, but it just add to th fun of mtb.

The Foel up above Pontrhydyfen, Tonmawr cycle routes up around windmills, views up on top are stunning, up around Glyncorrwg and over to the Rhigos.
Don't do much on the single track stuff, usually stick to the fire roads.

Got the same bike Max bought it in Nov very good on cross country a bit awkward on some of the technical down hill stuff. I have fitted clip ons spd pedals on mine but my mate has gone for DMR V8 pedals which are very good grip but not clip ons.

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/dmr-v8-flat-pedals/

The Halfords pedals are not really meant for off road use they are shit.

Brilliant spread of gears and very fast, bargain of the MTB world at the moment.

Yep, been mountain biking for some time now, and it's a great hobby especially with such great trail centres around here.

Sadly, I can't offer much advice because i still know hardly anything about actual bikes!

Well that was helpfull!

Been looking for ages for a pair of cycling shoes, bleeding expensive they are bloody hell, looked in Sports Direct at the Karrimor range of waterproof walking trainers, but they weigh a ton, but they seem the only decent type of shoe with a decent grippable sole. Ideas/thoughts fellas?
