What age are you on about Jackfath?
The early GTI's were very good whereas the early 3's we're not. However BMW have caught up and overtaken their counterparts from Wolfsburg. My next car will most likely be a 4 series. |  |

Anyway, a BMW 3 series all day long. Unless you're talking a second car then it would be a Mark 2 Golf GTI.
Having said all that, i'd get a C Class Merc Coupe instead. | |

The GTI is definitely less common and therefore a little more prestigious but the later of the 3 series coupe's look very nice with the right colour / alloy combo.
What characteristics are you after in a motor and are you settled on a petrol? The GTdi is different gravy and the 320d M Sport is the best value of the range. | |

I've had a few Golf GTI's over the years, good cars and hold their value quite well currently got a Golf 2.0 TDI, not as lively as the GTI but powerful enough and good on fuel. |  | | |

That rules out a GTI in the true sense then and you would have the GTdi - very similar in car specs.
I've driven Audi diesels for the past ~ 7 years and I think the BMW engines are now more refined. However for something up to 5 years old it may well be a case of finding 'that car'. You will do well to find a good nick GTdi going for a sensible offer particularly with the DSG box.
For me, it's time to change. I'm heading towards the people from Munchen.

Not really, you're buying second hand, the private market fluctuates massively from person to person, area to area. There are some bargains to be had out there.
And the quality in a Merc is noticeably better than Audi's/BM's. [Post edited 20 Apr 2014 17:51]
